The Manchester Anthology: Walking to the mail
http://manchesteranthology.blogspot.com/2011/05/walking-to-mail.html
How to build a book, in quite a few uneasy steps. Friday, 27 May 2011. Walking to the mail. In which Alec wishes he had a much snazzier camera on his telephone. For today there was post, and it was good. I'm now clutching the advance proof of the anthology. Okay, I'm not clutching it right. Look, it has three dimensions! Just like a conventional visual perception of the universe. A real human thing reading the anthology. I have it on good authority that he enjoyed it. In other news, the full set of autho...

How to build a book, in quite a few uneasy steps. Monday, 23 May 2011. Jeremy White grew up on a farm in the southern United States. Before moving to Manchester, he received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Georgia and worked in book publishing. ‘Don Juan’s Harem’, featured in the anthology, is an adapted extract from a longer work-in-progress. The Manchester Anthology: Colin J Stewart
http://manchesteranthology.blogspot.com/2011/05/colin-j-stewart.html
How to build a book, in quite a few uneasy steps. Monday, 23 May 2011. Colin J Stewart has had stories, poetry and articles published in half a dozen obscure writing journals. He has won or placed in equally obscure contests for fiction, speeches, slam poetry and math. His greatest literary achievement was having a poem framed on the wall of a $1.50-a-slice pizza joint in Vancouver. His first novel, A Question of Extremes. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Walking to the mail. Luis Enrique Mendez Angulo.

Alec's Oddments: Facts and fiction
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2010/11/facts-and-fiction.html
Words, words, words. Monday, 1 November 2010. However, when you're trying to write about the Cyprus Problem (what Britain calls it when it wants to make it sound like Cyprus's own fault) or the Cyprus Dispute (what Britain calls it when it wants several thousand years of disgruntlement, unease and intermittent killing to sound like two neighbours squabbling over a leylandii), you don't get facts. Just stuff. Also put your title in Greek, to make it clear which side of the Greek/Turkish divide you're on.
Alec's Oddments: September 2010
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Words, words, words. Thursday, 30 September 2010. People were kind. This is good. I thank them for helpful comments and sparing of my self-respect. I think my monster is now looking reasonably attractive. It might not be a thing of holiness, but it shouldnt scare the villagers. Links to this post. Sunday, 26 September 2010. In the beginning were some words. Also, I wanted to put this up:. Links to this post. Friday, 24 September 2010. Howard Jacobson at the Guardian Book Club. As part of the Manchester c...
Alec's Oddments: December 2010
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Words, words, words. Wednesday, 29 December 2010. Oh 'eck, I've been neglecting this blog. It was terrifically exciting at first, but now the novelty has worn off I'm starting to lose interest. A bit like parenting, then. Is there an internet social services? Not yet, anyway. Links to this post. Saturday, 11 December 2010. Things said to me by ex-girlfriends and in rejection letters from literary journals. You're not quite what I'm looking for right now, but please continue trying. Links to this post.
Alec's Oddments: August 2010
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Words, words, words. Monday, 30 August 2010. The new lit part two: a beast with many heads. The previous post in this microseries fumbled about with new forms of fiction, mostly involving using computers and the internet to transmit arty words in different ways. This time I’m going to look not at the words themselves but at the people behind them, and how people are starting to challenge and reconstruct the concept of an author. . Links to this post. Thursday, 26 August 2010. Jorge Luis Borges: Labyrinths.
Alec's Oddments: February 2011
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Words, words, words. Saturday, 26 February 2011. As well as scribbling away I'm currently trying to make an anthology of splendid stuff by people on my MA course. I think this counts as self-self-publishing, or something: the whole production process is happening in-house. And by 'house', I mean 'room in university tower block where I have a laptop with InDesign on it'. With any luck by early June you'll be able to buy copies of The Manchester Anthology. Alec's Oddments: May 2010
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Words, words, words. Saturday, 29 May 2010. Lost in the supermarket. Certain regions of supermarkets are lands of horror and darkness. Food is fine. I can do food. Pick things that are tasty and not rotten, put them in basket, wave basket at the automatic scanner thing, hit the automatic scanner thing, then look sheepish while aisle attendant fixes automatic scanner thing. Easy. . Links to this post. Tuesday, 25 May 2010. The Restraint of Beasts - Magnus Mills. Links to this post. Saturday, 22 May 2010.
Alec's Oddments: Review index
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/p/review-index.html
Words, words, words. Right now, 'index' is little but pomposity. Really it's a list, and not a very long one, either. Still, if all goes to plan it will grow, a bit like the Very Hungry Caterpillar (not yet reviewed, sadly), but with words instead of fruit. The Slightly Peckish Bookworm, if you prefer. Atwood, Margaret: Oryx and Crake. Borges, Jorge Luis: Labyrinths. Byatt, AS: Possession. Calvino, Italo: Invisible Cities. Chesterton, GK: The Napoleon of Notting Hill. Cohen, Leonard: Beautiful Losers.
Alec's Oddments: Centos
http://alecijohnson.blogspot.com/2010/12/centos.html
Words, words, words. Saturday, 11 December 2010. Things said to me by ex-girlfriends and in rejection letters from literary journals. You're not quite what I'm looking for right now, but please continue trying. You’re slightly too sentimental for my tastes, and less engaging than I had anticipated, though quite charming. Unfortunately you lack pace in the middle, and you’re longer than I usually like. I receive several hundred submissions a month so unfortunately cannot provide individual feedback.

The Manchester Anthology
How to build a book, in quite a few uneasy steps. Wednesday, 8 June 2011. The postman, in this case, never rang at all. But he still brought the books, goshdarnit. This involved me lurking outside the tower block, leaping out at delivery vans and asking them if they had a crate of books in the back. Luckily I didn't intercept anyone's last-minute revision pack, but instead ended up with five boxes of shiny new copies of The Manchester Anthology. Links to this post. Labels: the finishing line.
