Since 1996, Manifesta has taken place in Rotterdam, Luxembourg, Ljubljana, Frankfurt, Donostia-San Sebastian, Trentino-Alto Adige, the Region of Murcia and Genk in Belgium and St. Petersburg. The Manifesta Biennials are initiated and co-organized by the Manifesta Foundation, based at its headquarters in Amsterdam. Die europäische Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst wandert alle 2 Jahre in eine andere Stadt innerhalb Europas. Dieses Jahr kam die Manifesta 11 nach Zürich. Mit den Parallel Events wollte die Gründerin der Manifesta, Hedwig Fijen, dass Kunst und Gesellschaft in einen Dialog treten würden, dass sich internationale und lokale Akteure begegnen und austauschen würden.
