The orchestra was established in 1974 by Eric Craig MBE and the incorporated society was formed two years later in 1976 with the objectives - to establish and maintain a symphony orchestra of young people and to promote and foster music in the community, particularly among young people. The orchestra remained in recess from the mid 1980s until the beginning of 2000 when it was re-established by Joseph Allan.

Wiri Licensing Trust and Funding Partners. The Wiri Licensing Trust. And funding partners The Trusts Community Foundation (TTCF). Have supported the orchestra since 2002. They have made substantial donations to the Manukau Youth Orchestra in recent years and more so in 2014 providing money for wages and the purchase of 80 new band and orchestra instruments. Affordable Music Tuition for Young People. The Manukau Youth Orchestra is working to provide affordable music tuition to more young people in Manurewa. We do this by providing instruments for students to hire at nominal rates and lessons in schools which are more or less subsidised depending on the decile rating of the school. Once students reach high school there are music tutors available in school so our programmes are based in primary and intermediate schools. And Waimahia Intermediate School.

As a violinist you can usually tell if the bow should be reset even without a breath mark written. In the first three examples (a, b, and c) there are rests between the notes which give you time to reset your bow. In the fourth example (d) there are no rests but it would only make sense to lift and reset the bow for each note. If they have been taught that a breath mark IS a bow lift.

The Manukau Youth Orchestra was established in 1974. Runs three orchestras and provides affordable music tuition for young people in South. One of the goals of the orchestra is to make sure it's programmes are affordable. The orchestra subscription is $6 for the year, the three day orchestra camp costs $20 and concerts are always free.
