L'épine dans le coeur. If you know me, you'll also know that I adore Michel Gondry. Joseph alerted me of his new film,. L'épine dans le coeur. The Thorn in the Heart), about his aunt who is also a teacher. Watch the French clip here. Michel Gondry chronicles the life of Gondry family matriarch, his aunt Suzette Gondry, and her relationship with her son, Jean-Yves. I'm completely excited about shooting our graduation this Saturday with Jon! I am so focused on work, exams, reflections, etc. that when I...

Sunday, January 30, 2011. Pho Friday (In case you can't think of anything else to do that night.). I have updated my restaurant list (to the left). If you keep up with it, you will see that I have added two Vietnamese restaurants to it: Pho 95 and New Saigon. Now, you have to understand that I am no expert in Vietnamese cuisine. In fact, until a couple of years ago, if you mentioned Vietnamese food to me, I might have responded by saying, "barf! So cultured, I know! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Ku-er: New Addition: Den Deli
http://foodkuu.blogspot.com/2010/02/new-addition-den-deli.html
Wednesday, February 17, 2010. New Addition: Den Deli. You may have noticed a new addition to my top restaurant list. Den Deli. It is the newest addition to the "Den" trilogy. (Sushi Den, Izakaya Den, and Den Deli.) Thanks to my good friend Julie J. who informed me of its existence and also recommended it. Let's see if I can remember what else Den Deli offered: sushi, o-nigiri (balls of rice, wrapped in seaweed and filled with either salmon or pickles), Japanese potato salad, other salads, edamame, miso g...

The Ku-er: Fish Heads In My Sack Lunch
http://foodkuu.blogspot.com/2012/06/fish-heads-in-my-sack-lunch.html
Tuesday, June 5, 2012. Fish Heads In My Sack Lunch. A few weeks ago, my 6-year-old told me she didn't want to take onigiri in her sack lunch for her field trip. I suspected that this day would come, but I had to ask just the same. Why don't you want to take onigiri? I have to admit, as much as I should have against this processed food product, they're pretty darn good. And convenient. Ewww What IS that? Ewww" "Ewww." "Ewww.". Despite my feelings about these Japanese lunches, my mom never stopped making t...

Saturday, May 12, 2012. Dinner and a Sushi Movie. We had reason to celebrate, and there was a movie Jake was interested in, so we indulged. Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Was in town. If you like food, and you particularly like seafood, I highly recommend it. It's a documentary about an 85-year old man whose tiny sushi shop in Tokyo has three Michelin stars. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie left us craving sushi, of course, so we opted for Sushi Den. So here's my message today:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, January 20, 2010. The Dangers of the Beverage. What do you think the worst problem to crop up from your restaurant fountain soda could be? The customer was quite upset, claiming he could have been killed if he had swallowed or choked on it. Now, a few things came to my mind at this claim:. 1 Could a person really swallow a soda fountain nozzle? 2 For those who have never dealt closely with a soda fountain nozzle, these things are about 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. According to a Virginia unive...

Recipe-driven observations from the sublime to the ridiculous. Fried goat and discomfort. I am just back from Addis Ababa. It is big and sprawling and amazing and smoggy and fascinating and filled with traffic and rubble and green and yellow painted corrugated tin construction fences. The tej and goat were consolation for our inability to see the waterfall, baboons, and medieval monastery we had set out to see. As we headed back to Addis our driver-friend asked if we wanted to stop for lunch. The...After...

Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Traditional Japanese for Busy Folks: Kinpira Gobo. It's been a busy year. But then again, when is life not busy? As it turns out, that is the beauty of this little recipe. I made it for the first time a few weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised to find out how quick and easy this is. This dish is actually one of my grandmother's signature sides. Or used to be- she tells me she doesn't cook any more. Maybe I can make it for her when I visit in a few months. 1/2 cup dashi s...
