Zu Beginn des 12. Jahrhunderts (erste urkundliche Erwähnung 1162) ließen sich adelige Fräuleins hier nieder. Später wurde die Ansiedlung dem Orden der Prämonstratenser unterstellt und der Jungfrau Maria geweiht. So erhielt der Ort seinen Namen: MARIAROTH. Das Kloster besaß Ackerland, Weinberge, Wiesen und Wald in der Dieblicher Gemarkung. Ursprung ist ein in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts gegründetes Kloster der Prämonstratenserinnen. Die Klosteranlage bildete eine selbständige Wirtschaftseinheit mit Hof, Mühle, Fischweiher, Scheunen, Ställen, Feldern und Wiesen. Im 18. Jahrhundert führte eine unsolide Wirtschaftsführung allmählich zum Niedergang des Klosters bis hin zur endgültigen Auflösung 1794. Nach zunächst französischer und später preußischer Verwaltung wurde die Anlage 1819 verkauft.

Das Brunnenfest ist aus der früheren Mariarother Kirmes entstanden. Es findet am Dorfplatz (Kastanienbaum) statt, dort wo auch der Brunnen steht. Dadurch erhielt es vor Jahren seinen Namen. Hier kommen die Mariarother einmal im Jahr, meist kurz vor den Sommerferien, zusammen um zu feiern. An diesem Tage ist der Dorfplatz mit leuchtenden Kürbisen geschmückt, welche noch Tage später den Anblick verschönern.
