Words Have Meaning? | Cooking up Ideas
https://markloux.wordpress.com/2013/11/22/words-have-meaning
Thinking into the future. Have you ever thought about the how we use words? Perhaps one of the greatest challenges to relationships can be found in how we use words. Perhaps you’re a lot smarter than me and are already thinking that this is a penetrating look into the totally obvious. Obvious for you, maybe, but it took me a long time to understand that in order to effectively communicate we have to understand how the other person uses words. While I think most words should have common understanding, the...
The Easy Way Isn’t | Cooking up Ideas

Thinking into the future. The Easy Way Isn’t. The problem is . . . well the easy button just isn’t. There’s really no easy way to get organized other than take the time to organize properly. Without it, you’re back to a mess in no time. Yep. If you’ve seen my desk and back room you know this is true. Why? Because it takes time and I would rather be doing something else. Maybe it’s in our nature to want to always take the easy way but so often it leaves us wanting. I have. Skinner’s right when h...Or mayb...
The Gift of Being Yourself | Cooking up Ideas

Thinking into the future. The Gift of Being Yourself. Have you ever wanted to be someone else? I wonder if the concept of the grass being greener on the other side of the fence isn’t just true for things. Could it be that you are secretly wishing you were someone else? So, what about you? For a lot of years I thought otherwise . . . I was told otherwise. Newer Entry →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:. Monday, May 21, 2012. Great Food Isn't Just Good Taste. I was reminded last night that great food isn't just about taste. Oh, things have to taste good but it takes more than that. Really great food involves all five of our senses. Of course there's taste, but sight, smell, touch and hearing all play a role in making for a special meal. Smells. But for cooking shows it's one thing to see it but something entirely different to experience it. I wonder how I can score a guest judge gig? Actually we were the...

Monday, August 26, 2013. Lord of the Rings, George Thorogood, Buddy Guy and Yo Yo Ma? Unfortunately for the last couple of weeks I've been busy with quite a few summer concerts at Ravinia. Beginning a couple of weeks ago we attended six of the twelve concerts through last Saturday. Frankly it's gotten in the way of me getting my blog completed. But we're back on schedule now. Thank you for your patience. Now onto this week's post. While we brought our "slimmed down" picnic, it was still a bit of a challe...

Monday, July 30, 2012. Sonoma County Wine Country, Day 1. After arriving in Wine Country very early this morning, we began the day with the free breakfast at the Best Western Dry Creek Inn in Healdsburg. Now I normally would put the Best Western down in the category of a Red Roof Inn, cheap, semi-safe lodging but the Dry Creek Inn could change your perspective. When we got into the tasting room, we found the wines to rival the gardens. Stunning. V-M-L is an artisan winery specializing in Pinot No...I'm n...

Tuesday, May 14, 2013. A Case of the Blind Leading the Blind? I've always wondered how much I'm influenced by the label or brand of a wine. I wonder if I like a wine because I know what it is or what I expect it to be. That's what made our event the other night so interesting. Many of the tasters, when told they were tasting just Chardonnays, told me they wouldn't be able to distinguish between the wines. Well, we all were in for a big surprise. All four wines were distinctive in their taste. Two differe...

Tuesday, April 16, 2013. Oregon's Beautiful Wine Country. Over the last month I've been all over the US. I've been to California (and visited one of my favorite wineries, Chamisal Vineyard) and I've been to Texas a couple of times and I've been to Philadelphia, Atlantic City and New York. As a result, my posting of late has been a bit erratic. That's something I intend to correct over the coming weeks. Thank you for keeping up with this blog in the meantime. I had never visited Archery Summit. On this tr...

Monday, June 25, 2012. You can choose your friends but not your family. That old adage about friends and family is absolutely true. And most of the time it comes out in spades right around a celebration of some sort. It's too bad because so often we end up ruining the celebrations that should be so special. Whether it's a wedding, a graduation, a birthday, Mother's and Father's Day we seem to gather to join the celebration. But sometimes I don't love that they involve family. This celebration involved a ...

Thursday, January 31, 2013. There's a Sinister Hand in My Wine. I mentioned in a recent post that I had visited the local Binny's superstore and picked up two really interesting wines from Owen Roe in Oregon. The first was the Abbot's Table consisting of grapes harvested from the Yakima Valley. He became the king of this land. Now that's what I call thinking outside the box. I'm pretty sure from that point on the O'Reilly family became sticklers for putting all the rules out there . . ...But that desc...

Monday, September 23, 2013. A Wine Country Visit to New Friends and Old. We just returned from a visit to California Wine Country (Napa and Sonoma counties) where we had the opportunity to make some new friends and to renew some old friendships. I have been traveling for the last couple of weeks and so this trip, right in the middle, provided a nice respite. Not only did they have some great information on the Napa Valley, they also had some items perfect for wine country. There was one we couldn't i...

Cooking up Ideas | Thinking into the future
Thinking into the future. I must hate you now! I’ve been really intrigued at the response over the last month or so to the passing of two political/social icons Justice Antonin Scalia and former First Lady, Nancy Reagan. In today’s world it seems to be an oxymoron. W can it be that people who couldn’t have disagreed with the positions of either more are saying wonderful things about the people they were. Is it possible for Justice Scalia and Justice Ginsberg to be really good friends? How can that be?

A path with heart does not make you work at liking it. This question is one that only a very old man asks. Does this path have a heart? All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. They are paths going through the bush, or into the bush. In my own life I could say I have traversed long long paths, but I am not anywhere. Does this path have a heart? Before you embark on any path ask the question: Does this path have a heart? 8213; Carlos Castaneda. The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge. And it...

The critics…not so much. We have hurt the efforts of rescuing the oppressed by trying to make it so complex and holding the rescuers to a standard that no one can reach. Sunday, August 9, 2015. So here’s roughly what I said. One of the others agreed. They also pointed out that most of the dialogue was the same length. It made it difficult to differentiate the characters. I reminded the group that it’s important to mix up dialogue with narrative and to break up the length of your sentences. Dialogue can also be used to convey a full range of emotions. Here’s an example from Fleeing Beauty that I used. 8220;I will deign to take that as a compliment.”. This was not the plac...
