*waves vaguely* - What's going on with CV?
http://cvirtue.livejournal.com/1993119.html
Whats going on with CV? Jul 28th, 2015 at 5:29 PM. Yes, I still exist, but mostly I'm on FB because the format fits better with my rather interrupt-driven existence, which is not directly related to the PSA. If you want to know more, feel free to ask me in person. PSA: Did you know there is a vaccine for Shingles? Did you know that antivirals will help, but you could still have life-impacting neuralgia for weeks or months afterwards? You don't get "offered" the vaccine until you're 60. For people over 50.

Writeup in Wired - Strummings. Life is a series of astonishing coincidences. 07:03 pm May 20th, 2010. So a week ago a writer for Wired.com contacted me about the fireflies, having found them through the Maker Faire. I exchanged a few emails with some details, and, well:. This is more than I'd ever hoped for! Good thing our website is now live. As of last night, that is. Nothing like the last minute to give you heart failure.). Or Leave a comment. Object#andand & Object#me in Ruby
http://weblog.raganwald.com/2008/01/objectandand-objectme-in-ruby.html
This is a snapshot of my old weblog. New posts and selected republished essays can be found at raganwald.com. Thursday, January 24, 2008. Object#andand and Object#me in Ruby. Ruby programmers are familiar with the two. The typical use for them is when you have a variable that might be nil. For example:. First name & = @first name.trim. You are trimming the first name provided it isn’t nil, and you are assigning ‘612-777-9311’ to the phone if it. Won’t work because. It can cause a lot of damage. Note that...

Back from a week away - Constructive Mayhem. 12:04 pm September 8th, 2010. Back from a week away. I just came back from a week in Yosemite with my parents and family. The scenery does make up for the crowds, though I was very done with people by the end of the week. Pictures may follow. Test prep class tonight and Monday; I have to make a call soon if I'm going to withdraw. I expect I'll take the test, but I want to see how well I do in the practice sessions. In related news, there's an election coming up.

Engineers vs. Hackers: "Exploding Error Codes"
http://engvhack.blogspot.com/2009/11/exploding-error-codes.html
Thursday, November 26, 2009. Life delays blog posts, but here we go at last:. We're experimenting with a novel error handling strategy that I call "Exploding Error Codes." The intended usage pattern looks like this: Any function that needs to indicate an error condition takes a pointer to an EEC. Requiring the EEC to be passed as an argument prevents it from being forgotten the way that a return value error indicator can easily be overlooked. An EEC has three states: unset, set-but-unchecked,. It is an e...

Fireflies at the Maker Faire - Strummings. Life is a series of astonishing coincidences. 04:19 pm April 2nd, 2010. Fireflies at the Maker Faire. Yes, that logo means what you think it means. And I are all official and stuff for displaying the fireflies at the Maker Faire in San Mateo. The name of our little company is Humble Earth. And we expect to be set up in the Dark Room, as the little fireflies aren't exactly a big deal out in the sunshine. Or Leave a comment. Thread started by Lys. When I visit bac...

Commit message formatting - James Y Knight. 19 May 2009 @ 10:11 pm. Or: GNU coding standards considered harmful). I've recently been watching GCC and GDB development, and every time I have reason to go looking through their commits, the total lack of useful information in the commit messages really strikes me. Take this commit message. For example, reproduced below for your convenience:. Okay, so quick quiz: what does this change do? Does it fix a bug? Tell from this message? Isn't that much better?

Thoughts and links about computer programming, by Russ Cox. Off to the Races. Posted on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Go is defined to be a safe language. Indices into array or string references must be in bounds; there is no way to reinterpret the bits of one type as another, no way to conjure a pointer out of thin air; and there is no way to release memory, so no chance of “ dangling pointer. Rdquo; errors and the associated memory corruption and instability. Here's a simple packaging of a type that lets...

Killing emacs22 annoying splash screen - James Y Knight

Killing emacs22 annoying splash screen - James Y Knight. 07 July 2009 @ 08:41 pm. Killing emacs22 annoying splash screen. But leaving it available when it's not annoying). I recently upgraded from emacs 21 to emacs 22 on my desktop, and was irritated to note that "emacs filename" now splits the screen in two with one split showing a useless splash screen. Emacs has always shown a splash-screen when invoked with no arguments, but the new behavior is to show it when your'e trying to edit files! By default,...
