Helpful Potions | Adventures in Turning

Tom's woodturning odyssey. As previously mentioned, I will be adding/updating some of my home cooked finishes in this section. I prefer to use natural finishes where possible and practical. I use shellac as a sanding sealer, rather than pre-manufactured sealers. Shellac comes in many colours/shades and can be blended for a range of timbers. The use of shellac is historical, going back to French polishing. Shellac was also used originally for electrical insulation. Not the drink. This is a polish made...

Tom's woodturning odyssey. The Story So Far. Following on from a YouTube video by Sam Angelo who has the. Channel, I thought it may be helpful to anyone starting out to have my opinions on machinery I have owned or used. As a relative newcomer to the hobby myself, and being on an extremely limited budget, I feel certain others are in the same position starting out and would be glad of the experiences (good and bad) of someone else in the early stages of learning. So, the lathe. The Myford ML8 was classed...

Tom's woodturning odyssey. Author Archives: Tom Speirs. September 25, 2016. Literally. I visited a tree surgeon in July and came home with several pieces of timber. One piece was a crotch from a hawthorn. As soon as I saw it I knew what it wanted to be. I rough turned … Continue reading →. September 18, 2016. It’s a kind of magic. September 12, 2016. Tom's woodturning odyssey. Newer posts →. Started on the pile. July 10, 2016. I made a start converting some of what I gathered from the tree surgeon into turnable blanks. My poor wee band saw was screaming, right at the limit of what it can cut. It managed however, and I was able to cut bowl blanks from the slab of oak. The pen blanks are from the blocks of yew, but these bowl blanks came from the oak, along with a few spindle blanks. The timber is a piece of oak I got from work in 2013. A very larg...

My Shed/Workshop | Adventures in Turning
https://adventuresinturning.wordpress.com/my-shedworkshop
Tom's woodturning odyssey. It’s the end of an era for my old shed/workshop. I decided it needed replacing, and sourced a new building. (more on that later) The old building had to come down to allow the new one on the same site. I was horrified when all the cabinets and benches were stripped out. I knew it was in a bad way, but had no idea just how badly rotted it was. The brown rusty looking substance is all that’s left of the bottom rail of the frame. So the old shed is now gone. And opposite the door.

I don’t make any money doing this, it is a hobby after all. As hobbies go, it is not the most expensive. All the tools and equipment do cost though. I would also be grateful for offers of interesting timber. Say something. Say anything. Prove you're really real. Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Enter your...

Tom's woodturning odyssey. A Little about Health and Safety. I am a woodturning hobbyist. I take full responsibility for my safety and that of visitors to my shed. If you see something you like on any of these pages and decide to copy it, please remember your personal safety is your responsibility. If you think something might not be safe enough for you to carry out, don’t do it. As my Mother used to say to me, “If you fall and break your legs, don’t come running to me.”. A very wise man often said:.

Nice Bottom Madam……. | Adventures in Turning

Tom's woodturning odyssey. WordPress at it again. Nice Bottom Madam……. August 2, 2015. I haven’t really been getting much turning done lately thanks to the weather, my shoulder, and family commitments. Like many turners, I have previously used a recess in the bottom of the bowl to hold the wood in the chuck to hollow the inside. More recently, I have been using a tenon on the bottom, and then removing it afterward to leave a flat bottom. I think it looks pretty good. The top looks fairly reasonable.
