Musings of a Misfit. Food Pics of the Week. February 2, 2009. 1 down, lots more to go. So I have finally knocked one “yeasty” thing off my list🙂. And delved into the world of soft pretzels! It was not hard at all. I can even say it was fun. The dough was soft and pliable. I will probably make them again soon! This is what I did:. 1 packet of active dry yeast. 1/2 cup very warm water. Mix these in a bowl and keep aside till foamy. Set aside in an oiled bowl for an hour or so, covered, until it doubles in...

Will add recipe links later! Laquo; Rambling on materialism. 1 down, lots more to go. On January 5, 2009. Hehe, thats the big question! Banana Nut...

May | 2011 | Milwaukee Masala
https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2011/05
Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. This dish smells like India to me. Out of all the Indian food I cook on a regular basis, the spices and coconut in this “spiced rice” dish smell the best when cooking. It reminds me of being in a house in Pune. Masale Bhaat in the pot. Masale Bhaat (spiced rice). Several curry leaves (4). 1/2 tsp. mustard seeds. 1/2 tsp. cumin seeds. 3 Tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut. 1/4 tsp. turmeric (I always add a pinch more). 1/8 tsp. black pepper. 1 tsp lemon juice.

Home-made Vegetable Stock | Milwaukee Masala
https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2011/01/04/home-made-vegetable-stock
Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. The stock, before it simmers. I really hate wasting food. Not that I’m trying to sound holier-than-thou, but every time I throw a package of baby carrots or a rotten potato away, I always end up feeling really guilty. In fact, one of the things I really admire about my mother-in-law is how she manages to save, reuse, and not waste vegetables. You have stock to use in home-made soups, risotto or whatever else strikes your fancy. I’ve found vegetable stoc...1 Almos...

Pomegranate-Avocado salsa | Milwaukee Masala
https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2010/12/17/pomegranate-avocado-salsa
Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. The salsa is in the bowl on the right. My final papers have all been turned in, I’m over my cold and I’m on vacation visiting my parents in Wisconsin. I also finally have time to cook — and to blog — again. And I apologize for not responding to some of the comments posted on my blog, but wordpress has been finicky and hasn’t told me when I’ve received any comments. 1 large (or 2 small), pomegranates. 2 avocados, diced. 1/2 jar of pineapple salsa (or regular salsa).

Pasta Primavera | Milwaukee Masala
https://milwaukeemasala.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/pasta-primavera
Where East meets Midwest – in my kitchen. This pic turned out blurrier than I expected. This dish falls into a catagory of foods I think of as “first becoming a vegetarian foods.” That’s because my mother made it a lot when I first decided, at 16, to become a vegetarian. And when I came home from college on some weekends, she would usually end up making pasta primavera, too. And I would take the leftovers home with me in Tupperware containers. So, it holds a special, nostalgic, place in my heart. 1 1/2 c...
