How To …. What I've been thinking. Posted by Toby French. In How To . Asymp; 2 Comments. There is nothing wrong with just telling students the information they need. Talk to them. It’s efficient, avoids misconceptions, and actually promotes further discussion. It also helps to develop our own ability to explain, which is still something which is sorely lacking in training.). Teachers do need, however, to be able to talk effectively: a lecture. Be boring, whatever the content. This is a bullshit excuse.

How To …. What I've been thinking. Utopian thinking: keep teachers in charge of schools. Posted by Toby French. Asymp; 2 Comments. A reply to this. E are living in interesting times, and that shows no sign of changing. We are ready for new solutions. What you so often hear from all sides of an argument is that they are doing this for our children’s future . Yet that future is one of the biggest unknowns. Are today’s children going to be doing jobs of which we can’t yet conceive? Of the United Nations Con...

How To …. What I've been thinking. Show and Tell: One Year in a Secondary School. Posted by Toby French. In Show and Tell. Asymp; 2 Comments. So, I was approached by John Catt Educational. To write a book, which was lovely, but also a bit scary. I mean, what do I have to say in 70,000 words that I don’t already say in 1,500? Seriously, what would I write about? I don’t pretend to be an expert on anything, and those subjects on which I do feel at least more. Does that sound silly? The fabulous cover was d...

How To …. What I've been thinking. Posted by Toby French. Asymp; 1 Comment. I was nominated for three categories in this year’s Education Blog Awards. Or #eddies15. I don’t really know anything about this but it’s nice that someone noticed. Anyway, out of the three I came fifth in the Best New Blog. Category, which I reckon means somebody other than myself must have voted for me. Thank you if you did! It was also great to see Andrew Old. Come third in both the Best Individual Blog. You get what anybody gets. You get a lifetime. Because … I can. May 29, 2015. May 29, 2015. My Year 11 English Language students are currently doing an assessment task. I have an enormous pile of marking to do. I have to write reports within the next couple of weeks. So what do I do with this 100 minutes of silence granted to me? I start a blog, of course! So, as Albus Dumbledore himself said: Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Follow you ...

June | 2015 | you get what anybody gets

https://yougetalifetime.wordpress.com/2015/06

You get what anybody gets. You get a lifetime. Because…life is scary. June 9, 2015. June 9, 2015. I love Amanda Palmer. There. I said it. I love her honesty and her courage and her insights into, seemingly, my head. This is what she wrote in. The Art of Asking. The Fraud Police are the imaginary, terrifying force of ‘real’ grown-ups who you believe – at some subconscious level – are going to come knocking on your door in the middle of the night, saying:. Gah Back to writing reports now, I suppose. The re...

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. July 9, 2015. July 9, 2015. The Haptic Monk Says “Give”. 8220;I’m going to need bigger pockets.”. In a taxi, wending home, full of grumble, gripe and a general demeanour more akin to Victor Meldrew than my usual Father Furlong (ask anyone who knows me better than they would like), I tapped listlessly at my phone’s screen as silent as a haptic monk. I’d spent the day (between lessons) trawling www.primarycurriculum.me.uk. It has been a fractious week academ...

Towards a unified theory of negative capability. July 17, 2015. July 30, 2015. I can say goodbye to only so many hamsters: my #teacher5aday. How those prawn’s eyes bore into me: ‘J’accuse! 8217; they say. I can say goodbye to only so many hamsters. What I've been thinking. Does anyone teach decontextualised facts? Posted by Toby French. Asymp; 2 Comments. One of the criticisms I read so often of a knowledge-based curriculum is that the focus is too much on facts and not enough on understanding, as if facts are somehow these noumenal, things-in-themselves, entirely devoid of any other meaning. This is a mistaken and wearisome misunderstanding of knowledge. Here’s why. These are facts: a dog is. Without knowledge of totalitarianism? What about, &#821...
