I was born in Houston, Texas, but have lived outside of Chicago, in Niger (West Africa), in France, and, of course, in California. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and a Master's in Elementary Education. How to be a better reader. Here are some strategies to use when you come across a word that you don't know:. 1) Skip the word, keep reading, and then come back to the word. Make sure the sentence makes sense! 2) Reread the title and look at any pictures on the page. 3) Look for words you know in the hard word. 4) Sound the word out and chunk it (divide it into syllables). Remember, you might not need to use any of these strategies if you just reread. And make pictures in your head as you read!
