The Museum is open for train rides on Saturdays and Sundays from May through October. You may board the train at the Nelson Crossing depot (the main Museum site) or at the Wabash Depot in downtown Monticello. Layovers at either depot are encouraged. You can walk through the museum cars and view many pieces of rolling stock at the museum site, as well as visit the Museum's gift shop. 2016 Regular Weekend Schedule Buy Tickets. Saturday, April 30 – Sunday, October 30, 2016. No return trip to downtown.

Experience riding behind our recently restored. 1907 Southern 2-8-0 steam locomotive #401! 401 runs about once a month during our regular operating season. Ticket prices are increased when 401 is pulling the train, as steam costs much more to operate than diesel — on an average day 401 goes through about 300 gallons of oil and 5000 gallons of water! Saturday, September 17 and Sunday, September 18, 2016. Come ride our vintage passenger and freight trains on the former Illinois Central and Illinois Terminal main lines. One of the trains will feature the Museum's restored steam locomotive 401. Ride freight and passenger trains from 10 am to 5 pm each day. Use the Caboose Hop between the Nelson's Crossing depot and the yard to visit the shops and view additional exhibits. Expanded children's area, including Hodge Pedal Car rides. Children (2 through 12).
