Putting on the Brakes

Wednesday, July 15, 2009. June and July are the most humid months in Shanghai, called the “plum rain” days of summer, because it’s both plum season and incredibly rainy/muggy/sticky season. Basically, ick. Three showers a day kind of ick, and one of the main reasons I’m glad to be leaving Shanghai …clearly. Well, I like to look back and see how I’ve really come to accept this place and the many sides of it, and how thankful I am for the incredible opportunity I was given. Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Putting on the Brakes: October 2008

http://mskimberlytan.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 31, 2008. And so when life starts picking up the pace, I realize, sadly, just how easy it is to lose touch with friends - even family - back home. And when life in the States get busy, it's harder to remember your friends that live halfway across the world. How do people who go abroad deal with this (ahem, enter Julie, Daniel, Missy? What a flake, right? I guess all this is a direct result of moving 7,000 miles away from home. Ha. It's certainly a learning experience though. Or maybe it w...

Putting on the Brakes: a lot to say

http://mskimberlytan.blogspot.com/2009/05/moment.html

Sunday, May 10, 2009. A lot to say. If you've kept in touch with me lately, you've heard me complain about the "children" I teach here in Shanghai. Yes, I do teach kindergarteners, actual "children" on the side, but for my daytime job, I teach 20-somethings at the university level, and they just about make me wanna pull my hair out every day! Gabs constantly shook her head at inadequate table manners and taught them the right way. Medina was the role model of the century with her impeccable classroom...

Putting on the Brakes: fendou

http://mskimberlytan.blogspot.com/2009/04/fendou.html

Friday, April 10, 2009. Lyrics to the theme song of my new favorite tv show.albeit sad, but actually.true. PS Check my translation - I'm no poet :). 我很好("I'm Fine"). In the winter when it snows and I have you. I don’t feel the cold, even in the very depth of it all. In the spring when the flowers bloom and you’ve gone. I’m here, and I don’t go anywhere without you. But I love you so much. And I want us to be forever. But you’re on the other side of the world. How do I say that to you? Try to forget you.

Putting on the Brakes: January 2009

http://mskimberlytan.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 18, 2009. Allow me to share with you an especially dorky - albeit girly - moment in the life of Kim. (Shut up, Tina and Betty. I can see you nodding knowingly with all too much enthusiasm at the "dorky" comment! Well, Thursday I got a great (and extremely economical) haircut, but of course, I don't know a thing about styling hair and it really all goes to waste, until maybe 6 weeks later when I finally get used to everything and can do my hair again. Vicious cycle. F* k I've butchered them.

Desserts & Snacks. Food & Cooking. Chris in Real Life. Blogging & Tech. Ginger Tea for a Sore Throat. January 11, 2010. Has come close to helping out more than drinking some warm ginger tea twice a day, and especially before singing. No more frogs, finally. (It’ll also help to keep yourself way hydrated by drinking maybe 2 liters of water each day. Your sore throat likes to stay hydrated.). Since posting this originally I’ve added an update (at the bottom). I think you’ll want to read it. 3 Cut a chunk o...

Bici vecchia: an errant in. nyc. Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Come on up, lay your hands in mine. To present any coherent collection of my thoughts and recollections from the past election-into-elect-into-Inauguration season is beyond me these days. I would, however, like to fire out some ramblings, errant-style, before the first heat of this historic moment passes completely. Was upon us, we joined a thronging mass of humanity up on Harlem's historic 125th Street to ring in the new era. And back at home...

Through doors open wide to the night I could see a world in miniature all in white: walls, uniforms, lights, ceiling, flour, floors, paper hats, thin rolled noodles. I know that Muhly draws on numerous and disparate sources for inspiration: medieval cosmologies, David Bowie, Egyptian archaeology, Italian Fascist architecture, the history of the novel, Balinese gamelan. Bici vecchia: an errant in. nyc. Thursday, March 26, 2009. How lost is lost? Riding home on the subway today, I got distracted by reading Bill McKibben. On knick-knack factories in China and locally milled oats in the Lake Champlain Valley and ended up in Queens. Which is not where I live. At all. Even as I rode off of my intended route, I noticed unfamiliar stations passing with little more than a nod - "23rd St. and Ely? One day, Charles Dickens saw a most peculiar word painted on the inside of a window.

Bici vecchia: an errant in. nyc. Wednesday, March 18, 2009. For the first time since Aught Eight, I saw the turtles out today in Morningside Park. Sunning on the rocks along the edge of the pond and floating out in the water and taking part in relaxing turtle activities. I take this as a good omen. And today feels like spring. Spring. Truly Scrumptious. Side note: did everyone besides me know that the authors of Chitty Chitty. Were one in the same? Kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies dráw fláme;. Each mo...

Bici vecchia: an errant in. nyc. Wednesday, January 21, 2009. There is a restaurant on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx that advertises “Fine Family Dinning.” Does that mean you can bring the kids and let them make a racket? Is “dinning” like “dimming”? Or more like “dunning”? Neither of those sounds good to me. What does sound good is, “Hey, I’m going up to eat at Dominick’s on Arthur Avenue. You want to join me? Don’t forget your decoder ring. And watch out for misspelled signs. They’re everywhere. People 'r...

Thursday, June 30, 2011. July 4th, 2010 I thought of making a quick bow to put in my hair. I found some ribbon, grabbed a dragonfly pin my late grandma gave me and stuck it in the middle.I felt so pretty and had so many compliments on it. A couple months later Michaels had a sale on their ribbon. To say I went crazy might be and understatement.haha. I made a bunch of ribbons and tried to sell them at a craft show at work. My boss actually just bought her first bow from me last week.
