The Musing Reader: October 2014

http://musingreader.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Plot to Plate (Recipes). Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Tomorrow at 3 pm, my fall break begins. One of the things I intend to do over the four-day weekend (in addition to cleaning my sadly-neglected home and working on my second novel) is read. As is my habit, I've been reading a little every night before I go to sleep, but this time I'm going to be indulgent and just sit in a CHAIR and READ. One of the books I've been meaning to read is John Green's The Fault in Our Stars. I hope it really IS. The first tim...

The Musing Reader: A "Theme Poem" - Doesn't Everyone Have One?

http://musingreader.blogspot.com/2015/04/photo-credit-mayfly1963-flickr.html

Plot to Plate (Recipes). Wednesday, April 8, 2015. A "Theme Poem" - Doesn't Everyone Have One? It's National Poetry Month, and one of the items on my reading challenge list is a book of poetry. So I went to the shelf of books from my good ole' days as an English major and pulled down the thinnest volume, 100 selected poems. Off the shelf and revisit some of my favorite poems now that I actually have some life experience. May my heart always be open to little. Birds who are the secrets of living. The beau...

The Musing Reader: When Does Violence Go "Too Far"?

http://musingreader.blogspot.com/2015/04/when-does-violence-go-too-far.html

Plot to Plate (Recipes). Thursday, April 30, 2015. When Does Violence Go "Too Far"? I came across a couple of passages of such violence while reading Nancy Dane's latest novel, A Reasonable Doubt. But there were two specific acts of violence in the story that disturbed me. (SPOILER ALERT! But when her own "moment of truth" comes and she's standing over a wounded man who is pleading for his life, she adopts Bill's solution to the problem - she brings the axe down so Harvey will no longer be a threat.

The Musing Reader: The "Guilty Pleasure," Marlow-Style

http://musingreader.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-guilty-pleasure-marlow-style.html

Plot to Plate (Recipes). Thursday, June 18, 2015. The "Guilty Pleasure," Marlow-Style. This story began when I needed to do a quick consistency check for a couple of characters who are the major players in my third novel. Both characters are introduced in my first novel, His Promise True. So my intention was to simply read the sections which feature those two characters, just to make sure I wasn't giving them personality transplants or anything like that. Leads right in to A Permanent Home. I'm being ser...

Musing Reflections

Reflecting on my new life as a first year teacher. Sunday, December 05, 2004. Whoa - how did it get to be December? The lack of posts does not mean I have not been reflecting - I come home every day and worry about the day I just left. And then I start homework for the graduate courses I'm taking to become a "real" teacher. I think I'm getting enough sleep - yet on the weekends, I have to force myself to do chores and not just gaze at the TV in a guilty, near-sleep state. Posted by Jen at 6:20 PM. I cann...
