My Life With Birds: January 2010
http://mylifewithbirds.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
My Life With Birds. Exploring my passion for birding. Thursday, January 28, 2010. Dispatch from Space Coast - Day One. Sunrise at the St. Sebastian River Buffer Preserve. It turned out to be no sacrifice at all and well worth the effort. The bus was 40 minutes late (damn, I could have slept some more! But we all grabbed some shuteye on the trip out to the St. Sebastian River Buffer Preserve. An active nesting cavity tree (note the spray painted circle). Jeff Gordon searching for red cockaded woodpeckers.

My Life With Birds. Exploring my passion for birding. Sunday, April 10, 2011. Arizona and Life Bird #300. This May (a few short weeks away! Brings two wonderful birding trips to my bird-deficient work-intensive life. The first is a half-week at the always-popular New River Birding and Nature Festival. In Fayetteville, West Virginia. Accurately described by Jeff Gordon. Miller Canyon, Ash Canyon, Huachuca Mountains, Willcox Cochise Lake and Rustler Park. Wow! I have purchased three new field guides for We...

My Life With Birds. Exploring my passion for birding. Saturday, November 13, 2010. Cape May Part Two - It's All About the Birds. Flocks of tree swallows swirl over the sand. Broad wing hawks and dozens of kestrels were highlights of the weekend. There is no place like Cape May for raptor watching. Morning flight over the hawk watch platform at Cape Ma. Click to enlarge and view the spectacle of hundreds of birds in flight). I couldn't have asked for a more exciting weekend - birds and great friends.

My Life With Birds. Exploring my passion for birding. Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Wordless Wednesday - Missing Aunt Marybeth. Links to this post. Tuesday, April 13, 2010. A fine spring day, scrubbing birdfeeders, admiring the plants in bloom in my yard (unfortunately, the forsythia didn't bloom - but it is full of green leaves and house sparrows! This is the weeping cherry tree in the front yard. Was even more beautiful last week before half the blooms blew off. And then I noticed this. Links to this post.
My Life With Birds: One Way to Kill a House Sparrow
http://mylifewithbirds.blogspot.com/2010/10/one-way-to-kill-house-sparrow.html
My Life With Birds. Exploring my passion for birding. Tuesday, October 26, 2010. One Way to Kill a House Sparrow. Deep cleansing breath. I spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the autumn sunshine and built a fire in the backyard pit. Good book, crackling flames, sunshine, golden and crimson leaves wafting slowly out of the trees, the smell of wood smoke. Life is good. October 26, 2010 at 8:51 PM. Hell with the HOSP. You have a backyard FIRE PIT? Is that feeder one of those squirrel deterrent ones?

KatDoc's World: October 2009
http://katdocsworld.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Thursday, October 29, 2009. I need a bug expert. And, I do mean "bug," as in "true bug" rather than "generic insect." I've got it narrowed down that far, based on the piercing-sucking mouth parts, the half-leathery wings folded in an "X" on the back and the long antenna. Near as I can come, using my handy-dandy Kenn Kaufman insect guide, is variety of Leaf-footed Bugs, genus Acanthocephala. I can't get any closer, either common name or species. Anybody want to chime in here?

Friday, June 20, 2014. Almost time for National Moth Week! And boy, is the mothing heating up around here! Just in time for NMW2014, I'm starting to get some real moths out in the yard. Temperatures have warmed into the 70s and sometimes 80s in the day, and it's as warm as the 60s at night- which has brought out the moths! The last two nights I've gone out, I've been putting my sheet on the front of the house (perpendicular to the street) instead of on the shed out back, and WOW- moth city! I know I tend...

Tuesday, May 20, 2014. Return to Moth Mania, Maine-style! It's been an entirely different experience mothing here in Maine, as opposed to the salad days of mothing in Central PA. For some reason, I just haven't had the success here that I had in PA, but I keep trying! I then did a little more reading online and found a mention of "self-ballasting MV bulbs"- NOW they tell me! I've tried the new lamp three times. Here's the sheet on the first night:. Still, I have had a few moments:. Of course, there were ...

Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Sunday, August 29, 2010. Taking a walk with Holly. I feel like I have been neglecting Holly lately, in favor of the baby. Panda demands a lot of time, and of course, she is very cute and photogenic, but that is no excuse for ignoring the older, better behaved dog. We walk slowly, at the pace of a dog's nose. I have no particular agenda this morning, so am content to let Holly take her time, soaking in an incredible. Scent that I will never know. And shades of green and brow...

Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Thursday, January 21, 2010. OOS at The Wilds: The big surprise. This post won't have many words. And, soon, you will see why not. The special treat for OOS members who attended The Wilds winter raptor event? A behind the scenes tour of the white rhinoceros building, including the new baby, 3 month old Anan, born on Halloween. And, we even got to touch. A mother rhino and her year-old offspring. Coming in for a closer look. That's close enough, lady. Back off.". 70's In surf...

Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Sunday, March 28, 2010. After registering for the 10th annual "Shreve Migration Sensation" at 7:00am, I elected to start my birding day at a wildlife area with the humorous name of " Funk Bottoms. Here, off SR95, is an observation tower that overlooks nearly 2000 acres of flooded agricultural fields, filled with waterfowl of all sorts. The pools also harbored a busy population of muskrats, doing their spring cleaning and making repairs to their huts. Next, I stopped by Brow...

Sunday, December 30, 2012. Mountain Bluebird, Badlands National Monument, South Dakota. I saw a facebook update on someone's "year in birds" and realized I hadn't really done any tallying of how 2012 went for me bird-wise. When I did do a tally (thank you, eBird), I was pretty darned impressed! Bronzed Cowbird, near Donna, Texas. Northern Hawk Owl, near Fryeburg, Maine. Here are my numbers:. North America (USA) Lifelist total: 371 (updated after a counting error). 2012 total birds: 282. I had no idea!
KatDoc's World: Why we discourage feeding raccoons
http://katdocsworld.blogspot.com/2007/11/why-we-discourage-feeding-raccoons.html
Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Wednesday, November 7, 2007. Why we discourage feeding raccoons. Because your vet may have to euthanize one for rabies testing. Here is the story: A client has been feeding some feral cats in her neighborhood. Always the opportunist, a young raccoon, probably a summer baby, had been visiting, too. Yesterday, while she was feeding them, the 'coon jumped up at her and bit her hand, rather severely. Today, he showed up with the raccoon in a live trap. To start, it. Rabies test...

Nature, pottery, pets, and me. Saturday, February 13, 2010. Great Backyard Bird Count 2010. If you haven't heard already, this weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count. It is a citizen scientist project that anyone can participate in. Simply watch the birds in your backyard for a few minutes, a few hours, or all weekend, and submit your list to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's web site at the link above. With luck, you might see birds like these:. Can you see the bicolored bill? Eastern Towhee, male.
