A Natural Scientist: Allergies
http://naturalscientist.blogspot.com/2015/07/allergies.html
In Which I Am Indignant. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Our otherwise very good family doctor said to give "limited" amounts of nuts to the baby before age one. Well, I'd already given her peanuts. Eggs, and cow dairy, to no ill effects. Also sesame, assorted fruits and veggies, wheat, and corn. Probably soy too though I wasn't really trying. Yesterday I have her a tiny amount of ground cashews. Ten minutes later her eyes swelled up so much she couldn't see out of one of them. I still feel like a terrible mother.

A Natural Scientist: Family Trips
http://naturalscientist.blogspot.com/2015/07/family-trips.html
In Which I Am Indignant. Saturday, July 25, 2015. Have you ever noticed that the more children you have, the more travel becomes like unto packing up a circus, tent and all? I think we might actually haul a crib mattress, a pack and play, two fans, and a tent to my uncle's house. I haven't been there since 2002 and I have absolutely zero memory of where I slept. It always seems like a good idea until you have to start stuffing the minivan! Mother of the year! But also, whatever, it's first grade.). DISCL...

A Natural Scientist: Dear Sister,
http://naturalscientist.blogspot.com/2015/07/dear-sister.html
In Which I Am Indignant. Sunday, July 05, 2015. So good job taking your questionable but legitimate adult decision about your life and turning it into a relationship-destroying disaster. Keep up the good work and you'll save me a fortune in postage and phone calls! In all seriousness, I kep trying to write her an email and they all come out as "I don't know why you can't be bothered to talk to me your own self but. What the hell? Is this what you want? Do you even give a fuck? I can't tell.". I think Id ...

The Heidi Hypothesis: Bacteria are controlling your mind
http://theheidihypothesis.blogspot.com/2011/03/bacteria-are-controlling-your-mind.html
Monday, March 28, 2011. Bacteria are controlling your mind. More evidence that we are. Superorganisms" of many creatures working together and against each other. Bruce German predicted this years ago. The study is pretty basic - they aren't showing that bacteria are responsible for Mozart's musical genius - but it provides proof of concept. The Heidi Hypothesis: Don't screw this up
http://theheidihypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/08/dont-screw-this-up.html
Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Don't screw this up. Then I tell myself not to get upset. My life is great. I'm in love with my wife. My daughter is delightful. My extended family is healthy and more sane than any of the families in the books. Yes, but, I rejoinder, this is a big chance, I've got to make the most of it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Heidi Hypothesis: A.O. Scott on "Safe"
http://theheidihypothesis.blogspot.com/2011/01/ao-scott-on-safe.html
Monday, January 24, 2011. AO Scott on "Safe". A review of the great - and oh-so-close-to-home - Todd Haynes movie. Are these dangers really out there in the world, or are they just in our heads? Neither answer is likely to make us feel better, or make us feel safe.". Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. The Heidi Hypothesis: Is pain always indicative of injury?
http://theheidihypothesis.blogspot.com/2011/05/is-pain-always-indicative-of-injury.html
Friday, May 27, 2011. Is pain always indicative of injury? My wife and I are in a childbirth class with a group of about 30 adults, and recently the question of pain came up. One student (apparently a scientist) argued that all pain was indicative of injury—the normal pain of childbirth, even emotional pain and grief involves small tissue damage in the brain. Fascinating! Carries with it a strong connotation of wrongness. It comes from the Latin. Damnum – a loss, eg damn) and. To strive) and seems approp...

The Heidi Hypothesis: Big Babies and Homebirth
http://theheidihypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/05/big-babies-and-homebirth.html
Friday, May 25, 2012. Big Babies and Homebirth. Do 9-plus pound babies need to be born via C-section? That's the thing that stood out for me after reading Samantha M. Shapiro's story. In this week's New York Times Sunday Magazine. I read this reprise on the homebirth debate with interest (and some dismay, since I talk about a visit to Ina May Gaskin on the Farm. Shapiro doesn't go for the prophylactic C-section, and that prophecy comes true:. I asked Amy Romano. Who has a new book out. On precisely this ...

The Heidi Hypothesis: This is cool
http://theheidihypothesis.blogspot.com/2011/03/this-is-cool.html
Friday, March 4, 2011. The plant above is called La Llareta. It's a bush with millions of tiny, tightly-packed leaves. It's in Chile's Atacama desert, and it's more than 2,000 years old. Rachel Sussman is photographing. The oldest living things in the world. It's interesting to see the type of things that have had the fortitude, or adaptability, or luck to survive from one epoch into a very different time. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
