The Naturalist's Angle: Redeyez N the Hood

http://naturalistsangle.blogspot.com/2014/04/redeyez-n-hood.html

Perspectives of a fly fishing naturalist. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Redeyez N the Hood. Gratuitious Redeye photo inserted here for the thumbnail in blogroll previews. There's a small creek that flows out of the state park where I work and through the suburban area where we now live. A short section of it flows along the edge of our neighborhood subdivision, although our house isn't really that close to it. which is probably a really good thing. given what occurred earlier this week. Wait where is it?

The Naturalist's Angle: Our trip to the U.P.- no hero shots for me

http://naturalistsangle.blogspot.com/2011/08/our-trip-to-up-no-hero-shots-for-me.html

Perspectives of a fly fishing naturalist. Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Our trip to the U.P.- no hero shots for me. It's been a month since we returned from our trip. We've actually taken a couple shorter trips since, which may have helped contribute to my writer's block (or "blogger's block" as my good friend Jenny let me know it is called). Kelly and I have been really busy lately, but I think it's finally time I tell about our great northern adventure. Aside from just catching a. Just up the road from wher...

The Naturalist's Angle: March 2015

http://naturalistsangle.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Perspectives of a fly fishing naturalist. Thursday, March 26, 2015. A long time coming. It's been almost a year. A lot has happened since my last blog post. Some of it good, some not so good. But fishing remains a constant in our lives. Kelly and I are counting the hours until we pack up and head to Florida to spend a week camping, fishing, and enjoying Mother Nature. We depart Saturday, and the gear is all coming together. Kelly's BIG Florida Largemouth, March 2011. T-minus 37 hours until launch. Windkn...

The Naturalist's Angle: February 2014

http://naturalistsangle.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Perspectives of a fly fishing naturalist. Thursday, February 27, 2014. DIY: A rod rack shelf for the other rods. I'm not as proud of this project as I am of my fly rod tube rack. The inspiration for this piece came from two sources- the wire rod rack shelves that are readily available at the big box outdoor outfitters and a wooden shelf I saw at a local thrift shop. This project was my attempt to synthesize those two things. The color variation in the poplar gives this piece a lot of character. To make t...

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : July 2014

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Thursday, July 31, 2014. New glass rod for smallmouth bass. It's a 6'6" rod which is a 4/5 weight. While the older models have a medallion on the handle that show it's made in the USA, the newer rods are made in China. I can't wait to take this rod on the water. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Pats Rubber Legs - nymphing for bass. Sunday, July 27, 2014. Foam hoppers for smallmouth bass. This is the Double Chubby. A nice Los Alamos Ant. And we all know this pattern.

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : June 2014

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Monday, June 23, 2014. They aren't all great but I love to share photos. This year has been a bit tougher. Last spring and fall, we had a pretty good flush. Unfortunately, it's changed my streams from how they've been for about the past 4 years. Every once in awhile, the streams change a bit. I've had to do some more exploring and hit the streams further out than usual. Thursday, June 19, 2014. New book. Scouting new waters. Smallmouth bass fishing. I took o...

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : Smallmouth bass - smallies on the fly - fly fishing for smallmouth bass

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2015/08/smallmouth-bass-smallies-on-fly-fly.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Monday, August 3, 2015. Smallmouth bass - smallies on the fly - fly fishing for smallmouth bass. I've got folks hollering at me that they've shared locations and how to fish for bigger fish. I guess I'm just stubborn or a fool. I would love to catch a nice 18" smallmouth bass. Rare as it has happened, I do get frustrated when I catch what seems to be the same fish following me down stream all day. August 10, 2015 at 7:25 AM. August 10, 2015 at 12:58 PM.

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : Vintage Fiberglass Fly Rod and Smallmouth Bass.

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2015/08/vintage-fiberglass-fly-rod-and.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Vintage Fiberglass Fly Rod and Smallmouth Bass. The stream has changed and I'm trying to find Smallmouth bass in spots that haven't been very productive. Areas that used to be plentiful are missing scads of rock bass and other panfish. A lot of timber and cover has washed away. However, I did find success in a large swift pool. I drifted streamers into the pool from a narrow run. August 12, 2015 at 7:17 AM. Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : Trout and fiberglass fly rods.

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2015/02/trout-and-fiberglass-fly-rods.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Sunday, February 22, 2015. Trout and fiberglass fly rods. After fishing on the Little Red few times with my father, we decided to visit a few other bodies of water. I've mainly been casting the Cabela's CGR 5/6 and 7/8. The TFO Clouser has been rotated in a few times. Instead of boring y'all with details from over the past few months, I'll just post some photos. The 5/6 CGR has become my favorite rod. Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : November 2014

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. While I almost never share where I go fishing, I don't think this photo will ruin the stream. For a Monday - and probably because is the week of Thanksgiving, this area was pretty full of fisherman. Just the thing I avoid when fishing - people. It's been ten years since I chased trout. http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Sunday, August 16, 2015. One last hoorah for the floaters. Caught a few smallmouth bass but nothing big. Had fun. Smallmouth are holding tight and are not very opportunistic right now. I find they start chilling out when overnight temps fall and water temps drop. They'll start looking to feed on hoppers. Hoppers haven't come in full force yet. I casted, nymphs, buggers, streamers, terrestrials, you name it. Soft strikes and Looky-Lou's. Unfortunately, most o...

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Thursday, March 19, 2015. More trout on the #glass. Mostly, I've stuck with my Berkley Spartan. I've used the Eagle Claw Featherlight a little too. I've fallen in love with my Spartan. And I'm still practicing a selective harvest. Well, time for smallies. Later. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). More trout on the #glass. Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : Cabela's CGR Review

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2014/12/cabela-cgr-review.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Thursday, December 25, 2014. While I only made one trip out with my new Cabela's CGR, I got a pretty good feel for the rod. This year is the first time since I first began fly fishing ages ago that I've used glass rods. I really enjoy casting the rod. While I do think Cabela's CGt casts like butter, I do think that 5 weight line on the 5/6 rod was adequate. December 25, 2014 at 8:58 PM. Thanks, Josh, for your review. I am just getting into all the glass ...

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying : April 2014

http://purposehere.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Bugging Out. Warm water Fly Fishing and Tying. Wednesday, April 30, 2014. Smallmouth bass stream fishing. I caught this smallmouth bass on a Rainy's Foam Cricket and I remember it being very hot that evening. Makes me crave warmer water and late springtime weather. I caught this bass on a feeder stream withing the watershed I fish most. I fish almost all the tributaries and on a recent outing, I got to thinking . . . "Where are all the stinking smallies? I'm sure of it but how many? I guess that's what k...

December 31, 2000. DECEMBER 31: ZERO AND THE NEW MILLENNIUM. At midnight on December 31, 2000, the U.S. Naval Observatory will drop their time ball to celebrate the beginning of the new millennium. Most people did their celebrating last year when 1999 gave way to 2000, but astronomers and other purists have been holding out for 2001. Technically, the first year of the third millennium is. Naturalist's Almanac

About Naturalist’s Almanac. JANUARY 1: NEW YEAR. January 1 is an insane day to celebrate the New Year. It’s not connected to any solar, lunar, or other annually recurring natural event. Nor is it agricultural, religious, or even very convenient. We could return to the earliest New Years in recorded history and celebrate with the ancient Mesopotamians, some of whom started their year with the new moon nearest the spring equinox, others of whom started theirs with the new moon nearest the fall equinox.

The Naturalist's Angle

Perspectives of a fly fishing naturalist. Sunday, March 20, 2016. We prefer to make our own.". This post was inspired by the legendary Joe Humphreys. Joe Humphreys, circa 1988. One of the first of many fly fishing educational materials I have acquired in my life was a video called "Fly Fishing Success: Dry Fly Strategy with Joe Humphreys" presented by Rod and Reel Magazine. I still have this video. and it may be one of the only reasons I still hang on to a functional VCR. My arsenal of country fried lead...
