Talking Pictures: November 2011
http://neiljmurphy.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 10, 2011. The Metropolitan and The Essex. I always liked this picture for the two-tone effect of the almost-silhouetted foreground and background and the way the midtone grays give a sense of distance to the buildings. If the buildings were as dark as the trees they'd seem as if they were both on the same plane. As it is, they're actually on three different planes. I had wanted to use this picture back in 2007 for my other website, Images of the Lost City. Visuals and Verbiage by.

http://neiljmurphy.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 28, 2012. BB-39 - USS Arizona Memorial. Pearl Harbor has been an American Naval Base since the 1890's, and was the site of the infamous Japanese surprise attack on the morning of December 7, 1941. As well as forcing the United States into World War II, this battle also resulted in the greatest loss of life on a single ship in American Naval history. Arizona Memorial - January 28, 1996. Memorial Wall - 1,117 Sailors and Marines. Dominating the far end of the memorial is the marble wall w...

Showing posts with label Last Year at Coney Island. Showing posts with label Last Year at Coney Island. Monday, September 21, 2009. With today officially being the last day of summer, I'll offer a few recent shots from Coney Island. Friday was a bright, clear day in New York, with a slight haze off to the horizon. The sun was noticeably into the low angle of winte r. Giving lots of glare off the water and long, stark shadows even at one o'clock in the afternoon. There's an eerie drone in the neighborhood...

The Time Machine: 42nd Street and 12th Avenue
http://neilstimemachine.blogspot.com/2007/09/42nd-street-and-12th-avenue.html
Thursday, October 4, 2007. 42nd Street and 12th Avenue. I have no explanation for the insanity that seems to have occurred here, at what was once a desolate corner across from the Circle Line piers. When the first picture was taken there were parking lots stretching from 11th to 12th Avenues on the south side of 42nd Street, today one immense luxury high-rise is filling up, while another fills in the hole created for it a block away. Thursday, October 04, 2007 5:34:00 PM. 42nd Street and 12th Avenue.
The Time Machine: The Cupcake Cafe
http://neilstimemachine.blogspot.com/2007/09/cupcake-cafe.html
Thursday, September 20, 2007. Even with all the sparkling residential high-rises that have erupted from its worn gray asphalt, these streets today, around the west side of the Port Authority, still maintain their air of insouciant grime. And in a happy ending, though the Cafe is no longer at this corner, a close look at the roll-down gate reveals a crudely painted arrow and the partial phrase, "We h-". Blocked by the parked car and phone booth (phone booth? I like your blog and your photos! How nice the ...

The Time Machine: April 2008
http://neilstimemachine.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 2, 2008. I'm really not sure what attracted me to this building. After 23 years I have no idea if I was passing the handsome facade on West 64th Street, or if I was wandering around the plaza at Lincoln Center, a block and a half to the west, when I spotted its most striking feature. She stood above west 64th street until 2002, when she was removed and stored behind the Brooklyn Museum where she underwent extensive restoration (including the removal of the lead-based paint covering it) a...
The Time Machine: The Majestic Theater
http://neilstimemachine.blogspot.com/2007/09/majestic-theater.html
Sunday, January 6, 2008. Since January of 1988 there has not been a show running at the Majestic Theater that wasn't called. Phantom of the Opera. When the first of the pictures above was taken, the curtain had gone up and the chandelier had come down only a few dozen times on this musical. Now, the show sets the Broadway record for longevity every single night, and it doesn't seem like it will ever. One of the places where time seems to have stood still in this rapidly churning town. Basically, I needed...
The Time Machine: August 2007
http://neilstimemachine.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Not much really changes in the theater district over the years. Since the destruction of the original Helen Hayes theater in 1982 (where I saw my first Broadway show in the summer of 1977, a matinee of Equus. With Leonard Nimoy) most Broadway houses now enjoy. Landmark status. This will (in theory) keep them from becoming skyscraper hotels, like the Hayes. The Shubert Theater opened in September of 1913. Interestingly, those first eight shows opened on March 24. Ran for 6,137 ...
The Time Machine: Moondance Diner - Late Update!
http://neilstimemachine.blogspot.com/2007/09/moondance-diner-late-update.html
Thursday, September 13, 2007. Moondance Diner - Late Update! It never occurred to me, as I re-took my pictures for these pages last June, that I'd have to be doing an update anytime soon. So many of those old scenes had been altered beyond recognition that finding an unchanged neighborhood made me feel as if it were safe and protected, perhaps for the next few decades. In the ground coffee before brewing it. It had an obligation to be there! Wyoming. Once there, they'll add kitchen and storage extens...

Talking Pictures
Sunday, February 5, 2012. Just because I spend too much time wandering around cemeteries doesn't mean I've lost my sense of humor. To the contrary, I think one needs a sense of humor in order to pursue this hobby; if you let the locations and inscriptions get under your skin too much, you're apt to go looking for a mausoleum with an empty niche to crawl into. St Mary Star of the Sea, Cedarhurst, NY. Powell Cemetery, Bethpage New York. The Merriam-Webster dictionary lists the first known usage of the term...
