How do I begin? If your opponent strikes with fire, counter with water, becoming completely fluid and free-flowing. Water, by its nature, never collides with or breaks against anything. How do I begin? Basic Rules and Etiquette. We have some basic rules of etiquette in the dojo. Practicing these rules connects you with the tradition involved in Aikido, and helps you to show respect to your fellow Aikidoka. If you’re ever in doubt, just ask! No shoes on the mat. Remove your shoes when you enter the dojo and place them neatly on the shoe rack. Arrive early enough before class to change your clothes and stretch a bit. Students should line up 5 minutes before class and meditate quietly.

How do I begin? In simple terms, Aikido is a martial art founded in the mid 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba based on the principles of harmony and expression of love for all things through budo. In deeper, more complex terms, Aikido training allows the human spirit to develop itself by unifying one’s body, mind, and spirit. This implies that there is a destination, but really, the path is a destination in and of itself. We train in the dojo, but we practice Aikido in our daily lives. We see that challenges can be opportunities t...
