We stayed at the Samuel Taylor Park on the way into San Francisco which is about 36 kilometres from Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge. Crossing the Golden Gate on a bike was a highlight. It is fantastic to see how popular the ride is and how important it is to the tourist industry. It is very busy on the bridge bikeway in the weekends.

We had a rest day in this campsite alongside the Chetco river in Brookings. This campsite has all the facilities including a good campsite,dining tent and facilities. Each day deer walked through the camp. This is a great place to have a rest day with its beaches and a good shopping area. This slideshow requires JavaScript.

One of the surprises of the California Pacific coast that leads into San Francisco is its remoteness and its small population compared to the other parts of the California coast. Riding south out of San Francisco was one of the least enjoyable sections of the ride. The traffic was heavy on highway 101 and it was not easy to negotiate your way through the coastal towns such as Pacifica. However it got better as we headed south and Santa Cruz was a good final destination before heading back to San Francisco.

This blog covers only the part of the route down through San Francisco to Santa Cruz as we did not cover all of the Pacific Coast route. However we experienced a fantastic ride that included great diversity in landscapes and people met so we were more than happy. The least important statistic for any ride is perhaps the total distance covered.

This is the road that goes off highway 101 for 16 kilometres where no commercial vehicles are allowed and it is a highlight on a bike that should not be missed.
