Skip to Main Content. A warm welcome in the Nelson Lakes. As you’d expect from a place built to lodge rough-and-tumble drovers in the early days of New Zealand’s history, Tophouse Inn has had a colourful past and many different incarnations. Discovered in 1842 by surveryor John Cotterell, the Tophouse Pass (now Wairau Pass) became the main inland route between Nelson and Canterbury. Hotels and accommodation houses were built along the route to service sheep drovers and other travellers. Longney did a roa...

Lambing and hail storms in Spring 2014 - Viva Muntanui!
http://www.muntanui.com/blog/muntanui-spring-2014
Given that a picture's worth a thousand words and we've had very little time to post anything of late, I thought I'd let this say it all:. Incidentally, that hail storm lasted an hour and it took nearly two days for the deepest patches to melt. Our 2014 lambing season was the best yet - poor old Spidey. Although I'd just like to say that we are TOTALLY over snow, hail, frost and freezing winds - and we're only two weeks away from the official start of summer! Posted by Farmer Nik. Godzone Adventure Race at Muntanui. Yesterday the Godzone Adventure Race. Competitors started coming down Beeby's Knob and through Muntanui. We didn't even know it was coming this way until the support teams started setting up in the paddock across the road. We could see headlamps coming down the track from Beeby's late into the evening as teams kept going through the night. There is video here. 8203;Posted by FarmerWan. Muntanui - now on Instagram! TB testing - getting there - Viva Muntanui!

TB testing - getting there. Stage One of yarding complete! One of the most stressful annual exercises in our farming calendar is TB testing. Every year we try to get a little bit better at rounding up the cattle and putting them through the yards, and every year we promise to put them through the yards more often so that they get more used to it. We're definitely better at rounding them up but we still don't put them through more than once a year. Will try harder! Fancy being tossed on these, anyone?

The Rocky Horror Pecking Show. We have a bully: a chook bully that goes around ripping feathers from the breasts of some of her sisters. We know this to be the case because Farmer Wan recently caught her in the act. Unfortunately, he was doing something else at the time and wasn't able to stop her. N ow he can't identify her. I have my suspicions but can't be sure unless I catch her at it again. Chooks are cannabalistic by nature. 'Nuff said. The best way to protect the three birds who are worst affected...

Nine months in nine haiku. When you start getting emails from people you've never met, asking why you haven't updated your blog in ages, it's time to pull finger and write something. I didn't realise anyone outside of our immediate circle of friends actually visits this site, so it was nice to know there are others enjoying our misadventures. In the meantime, here's a distillation of the last nine months, utilising that wonderful Japanese poetic form, the haiku. And some pretty pictures. Enjoy. Many than...
