The glitter-sprinkled holiday cards in your mailbox each year, your average southern New Englander rarely sees snow for Christmas. When truly unlucky, rain is the Yuletide precipitation. Or it may be akin to that one aggravating year when there was snow on the ground Christmas Eve- and a fog rolled in late that evening and "ate" every flake by midnight. If luck holds, there's already some on the ground. For a feeling of real enchantment, the snow starts falling as you leave the house for Midnight Mass.

As I was walking Tucker in the half-light before nightfall, I watched the fireflies winking between the houses in the neighborhood and around the trees and shrubs that surround the retaining pond. One flew just under my nose and I cupped my hand and almost caught it as it flashed. Nostalgia books talk about small children catching fireflies in the twilight, but I had never seen any in my life, at least until 1974. The thought still makes my teeth hurt (but boy, it was good). That Darn Spot (a.k.a. The Neverending Story). The house also had to be dustmopped daily (thank goodness for hardwood floors! The parlor vacuumed, the dishes washed and wiped. If doing the dishes or making the beds on a morning we were going downtown might make us miss the bus, we missed the bus! About the time I got old enough to iron, she had given up ironing panties, men's shorts, and the sheets, but the pillowcases had to be ironed! So victory was very sweet the day a big black spot showed up on Mom's.
