The View from Here. Observations, Poems, and Essays by Francesca Hampton. A challenge from Fabienne at Vajrapani to create an ultra short story around a metaphor used in Buddhist teachings on emptiness. This was the result. From where she sat in the mothers chair in the corner of the infant critical care unit, Tara. Fully for t...

I know only a very few, even among my friends, would share this odd sense of grief I feel – that harm was done all around me, terrible suffering inflicted on a massive scale, that I could not stop. Who worries about the pain of insects? Once notic...

Non-sentient certainly. Western culture views trees entirely as a resource – like corn and oil and cotton. Even Buddhist lamas are, in the main, uninterested in trees. I think we may be missing something. Yet what amazing beings they are, stan...

outside the windows: July 2005

http://outsidethewindows.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Thursday, July 21, 2005. Birds of a feather. The sparrows are not the most striking birds outside the windows, but they are ever present, and cheerful. Walking to the local shop where I get my morning coffee I say hello to the little brown birds perched in the apple scented sweetbriar. The sparrows nest in the eaves, and chirp, and flutter, and fly through the little fruit trees I have trained up against the wall. Wednesday, July 20, 2005.

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Wednesday, June 29, 2005. From beside the waterfall. The young Earth First! Guys came by to borrow a table and chair for their tabling project: hours outside the local market, talking to people, passing out the latest leaflet and some of the political paper that we print from within this shop. In fact, I should be working on that, not updating the blog. Yes, they'd found the small jars also. I'm so glad, I said. Glad it was you, glad you...

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Saturday, November 26, 2005. Am I the Devil? Carrie has struggled all her life with psychological problems, but mostly she makes it okay through the day or the week. She has a house, and a bunch of chickens, two dogs who adore her, some rabbits, and a vast tangle of gardens. I'm so sorry, I told Carrie. I didn't know she was close to you. We talked a while, and Carrie cried and cried. "What is happening to her body? She asked, and I explaine...

http://outsidethewindows.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Friday, September 16, 2005. What strikes me, as I read other blogs at random, is how many they are, and from so many countries. I envision folks bent over their keyboards, typing out their souls, their favorite songs, their problems, and now and then (don't you hate the spam sites? Some cleverly disguised commercial. All these words, all these souls, all these visions. And we briefly pass in the cyberworld. Kind of makes me catch my breath.

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Sunday, August 28, 2005. He stares at me with dark brown eyes. In one of these postings I mentioned Champ. I'm supposed to call him a Staffordshire Terrier, says my partner. I am so naive that when I picked him up and brought him in from the street I thought "oh, maybe a little shepherd cross". It was my kindly vet who looked at me with pity and said "you have a pitbull". Anyone seen him with a person? Buddy walked up to the hurt dog, and th...

outside the windows: October 2005

http://outsidethewindows.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Monday, October 31, 2005. My mother was born the same day and same year as Marilyn Monroe. She was stunned when Marilyn died. She cultivated a blonde, lush air, and even on her deathbed paused to flirt. Well, perhaps not really at the very end, when she was unconscious and hooked to machines, and far from her perfumes. My father bought perfume- or cologne anyway- for his growing teen daughter (and how we fought in those days). Heaven Sen...

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Friday, January 27, 2006. Another women in black friday. Or today, woman in black with flickering candle. Sometimes there are a few of us, and sometimes I stand alone, at the edge of the sidewalk, near the wall by the parking lot, facing the main street. I stand from 5 in the evening until 6, each Friday. We are not adverse to having men stand with us. This veteran stood with us for months, before he became too ill to stand. Sure thing, I sa...

http://outsidethewindows.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Tuesday, December 27, 2005. Happy Holy Days to All. I never really wanted to be an angel. The tinsel set into my fine hair always scratched, and the angel robe made of muslin sheets wasn't nearly as elegant as the sky blue robes worn by Mary. Mary was always some dark haired girl I hated. I had trouble keeping my wings on. Balancing on boxes in the back of the stage, singing quavering glorias- no, it really wasn't my thing at all. And this y...

Close encounters inside a remote northern California bookstore. Saturday, May 21, 2005. His son was eight months old. How can you say this is not true? I smiled in a certain delight, and wished him well as he went out into the sunlight. Posted by jarvenpa at 6:10 PM. Friday, May 20, 2005. He came in from the street. Says my artist friend. He's going north to test the waters. Posted by jarvenpa at 11:31 PM. Thursday, May 19, 2005. A break in the storms. I always meant to live in a garden. There's somethin...

Notes From Beneath the Sea

Notes From Beneath the Sea. Words and Wisdom from the briny deep. Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Heat waves rip over the canyon wall, a blurred curtain that distorts the broad brown wings of a golden eagle. A single male, the largest raptor in North America, rises quickly on occasional wing beats in search of a mate perhaps? Only God and the eagle know. With the passionless sun scouring the desert, seemingly barren, I am overwhelmed; this must be what Muir felt when first laying eyes upon Yosemite. Jessie is ...
