Ocean Treasures

Sunday, June 2, 2013. Back in the water! I was able to start the weekend by enjoying the glorious weather we had on Friday (sunny and 27C even on the coast! By slipping under the waves into the silent underwater world. I was training a couple of new students in the lab to count and measure eelgrass. Both had never done it before so it was a great new experience for them and gave them a taste of what it to come with this summer's field work in July and August. It worked beautifully and is ready for anothe...

Ocean Treasures: Gourmet Salad

http://oceanstreasures.blogspot.com/2013/04/gourmet-salad.html

Tuesday, April 16, 2013. I made this salad last night and it was DELICIOUS. According to Diego it deserves the capital letters! Sauteed onion and Apple Salad. 1 medium onion cut in half and thinly sliced into half moons. 1 medium sized apple cored and sliced into half moons. 1 head of kale or lettuce of your choice. Walnuts (to your liking). 3 tbsp Avocado oil (you could use olive or hazelnut oils). 2 tbsp Balsamic vinegar (I used the PC brand Fig Balsamic). 1 pinch of salt. I used a gala apple. Once the...

Ocean Treasures: January 2012

http://oceanstreasures.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 28, 2012. New Look and Giveaway! With a New Year comes some changes. In 2009 I posted about the Most Comforting Things in my Home. As part of Sherrie's. And who can blame me for picking my fish tanks, which at the time I had 4! I am still comforted by my fish tanks but with a full time job and PhD to finish, I was doing the bare minimum to keep them healthy. So when a co-worker approached me about advice on setting up a tank, I offered to sell her my 50 gallon bedroom tank! What i got f...

Ocean Treasures: March 2013

http://oceanstreasures.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 20, 2013. The old saying in like a lion out like a lamb doesn't seem to apply to March this year. At least not in Nova Scotia! Today is the Spring Equinox and we just got 10 cm of heavy wet white stuff mixed with ice pellets and lots of wind. Sounds more like out like a lion to me. We even got a 1/2 snow day! It is very rare for the University to close, so when it does you know it is bad. Sadly, it is not natural BUT it will have nice white flowers next time it blooms. Or commonly known ...

Ocean Treasures: February 2012

http://oceanstreasures.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 9, 2012. Mexican Recipes and Coconut Cream. We had a deal. Diego would take over the cooking once he finished his PhD so that I could have more time to spend on mine. It was only fair since I did all the cooking while he was finishing up. Ever since he got back from Mexico he has been cooking AMAZING Authentic Mexican Dishes EVERY DAY! The only downside to it all.is that I really enjoy cooking so I do miss it. I know it takes up a significant portion of my time and I do appreci...Diego...

Sea, sky and everything in between: February 2014

http://chipmunkheaven.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Sea, sky and everything in between. In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous. Aristotle. Sunday, February 2, 2014. Northern Saw-whet Owl story ends badly. I was called by the Foundation to help in transporting the owl as my spouse and I have volunteered to help out as drivers. There was quite a snowfall last night so it was agreed that we would bring the owl to the Toronto Wildlife Centre, which is closer, saving us a few hours on the road. I prepared a box for transport. I love every...

Sea, sky and everything in between: An ocean of plastic

http://chipmunkheaven.blogspot.com/2013/01/an-ocean-of-plastic.html

Sea, sky and everything in between. In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous. Aristotle. Wednesday, January 9, 2013. An ocean of plastic. It has been a long time since I posted. Last January I was diagnosed with breast cancer and so a new journey began. It was made easier with the love of friends and family and I am very grateful for all their caring. More strongly than ever, I. I was sent a link to a film that shows us how profoundly plastic. Http:/ www.midwayfilm.com/.

Cattleya Sun Mei Gold. The orchids have been growing buds for several weeks and now the first blooms are opening, bringing summer colours to a winter palette. Cattleya Shinfong Little Sun. They love the east facing windows, soaking in the morning sun when it appears, blooming for weeks. An icy coating on everything.

Sea, sky and everything in between: Giant Swallowtails

http://chipmunkheaven.blogspot.com/2014/11/giant-swallowtails.html

Sea, sky and everything in between. In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous. Aristotle. Sunday, November 9, 2014. This is the largest butterfly species in Ontario and it is expanding it’s range northward. The host plants for the larva in the northern part of its range are Hop Trees, Meadow Rue and Gas Plant. In the south it loves citrus trees. After approx. 1 week the eggs turned dark, likely transluscent and showing the dark larva within. I watched them go through several instars, s...

Sea, sky and everything in between. In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous. Aristotle. Sunday, July 31, 2011. Rabbits, Mantises, Stick Bugs. It’s been too long since my last post but I have a great excuse! Fireflies appear to have been replaced by other species just now, but in July it was wonderful to watch the twinkling lights in the warm velvety black nights. Since we don’t use chemicals on our property, we have a huge diversity of insects which in turn has sustained ma...One mor...

Mammy's Love: Green

http://mammylove.blogspot.com/2010/03/green.html

Monday, March 22, 2010. As you know, I have radically changed my lifestyle by adopting a vegan lifestyle, juicing, eating a 60/40 raw food diet. And now, I have added "green monsters" to my diet. What you ask is a green monster". Well, let me tell you, it is the yummiest smoothie (raw food) I have every tasted. I discovered this marvelous website thanks to my daughter called " The Green Smoothie Queen. You won't believe this, but you can't even taste the greens. Savour the moment of blending as you enjoy...

Mammy's Love: What Colour Is Your Aura?

http://mammylove.blogspot.com/2010/03/what-colour-is-your-aura.html

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. What Colour Is Your Aura? The human aura is an energy field that reflects the subtle life energies within the body. These energies make us what we are and in turn are affected by our surroundings and life style. Our aura reflects our health, mental activity and emotional state. It also shows disease often long before the onset of symptoms. Auras are an electro-photonic vibrational response of an object to some external excitation - for example ambient light. Children are natura...

Ocean Street Garden

Sunday, December 20, 2009. Tuesday, November 10, 2009. So, it has been over two months since the last entry.  I was working a lot more than at the beginning of the summer and the garden was let go in many ways, much more so my posting regularity.  . Eggplants were even less productive, and it was very late in the game that we eventually harvested the little fruits.  We pickled two pints worth, and had some delicious baba ganoush (sp?
