Off to Africa: June 2015
http://offtoafrica.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
I've been thinking lately that it would be nice to have a hammock. I own a hammock. I think. I just don't have it here. It is probably somewhere in my parents' basement, which is where everything is that I brought home from college/Rwanda/law school and dumped in the basement and then left there when I moved on to Rwanda/law school/Gone West. The only time I've ever hung that hammock was in Rwanda, which is funny because I bought it in 1999 in Nicaragua. It has traveled the world. A river. Unlike the...
Off to Africa: no regrets
http://offtoafrica.blogspot.com/2015/07/no-regrets.html
The nice thing about having guests (okay, not the actual nice thing, but a lingering nice thing after they leave and leave you all alone [sob]) is that the house is so organized. All those papers that lived on my dresser for 8 months? By gone, I mean stuffed in a brown paper grocery bag in the closet. Obviously.). My room has not been this bare of clutter since ever. Update: I managed the whole salad. It took me an hour.). So we turned around. We parked in the lot and hiked down the little trail to the w...
Off to Africa: February 2015
http://offtoafrica.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
I managed to go to bed at a normal hour last night (namely, before 11 pm. on a Friday.) and so I actually got a real night of sleep for the first time in a month. I still set an alarm. I cannot afford to get off track with my sleeping. A couple of friends met me downtown, where we went to a boutique sale and ate brunch and ran some errands. Also I want my second closet to be something other than a pit of boxes. It isn't that my new job is stressful. Sometimes people suggest that it might be stressful...
Off to Africa: November 2014

I signed up for a rock-climbing event yesterday. Okay, I signed up for three things yesterday: the coffee shop writing, a board/card games event, and the rock climbing event. And I am one of those people who does not say that I'm going unless I am really, actually going. I may rsvp at the last minute, but that is only because I refuse to rsvp yes and then not show up. But hopefully death would not be imminent.). As soon as my gimpy arms stop hurting. No," he said. "I knew there was something wrong, b...
Off to Africa: mystery
http://offtoafrica.blogspot.com/2015/08/mystery.html
Twice in the last week, I have gotten so thirsty that I felt sick. It's weird. This never used to happen to me. When I lived in South Sudan, when it was hotter than it ever gets here, I forced myself to drink (because otherwise I would never have to pee, which seems unhealthy), but I never felt sick if I didn't. This getting older thing blows. Or maybe it's my allergy medication? I should look at the side effects. It started with hiking. I have to hydrate while hiking or I feel sick. Now Gone West. A...

Six Months in Kigali: It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you...
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/its-gonna-take-lot-to-drag-me-away-from.html
Friday, January 9, 2009. It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you. I'm not even remotely ready for this. I had to physically remove myself from my laptop the other morning to avoid applying for a 12-month position here in Kigali. I know I need to go 'home'. The problem is that I. When my flight to Kilimanjaro just before Christmas took off, I felt this overwhelming, heady sense of. When you can live. I didn't realise this was going to hurt so much. Wednesday, June 25, 2008. So I've been here for three days, and so far, so good. The people are all really neat- the more they talk about their internships the more I keep thinking "Hey, I want to go back to school to study that. Will be arriving. I'm really excited for that, because these are people actually doing the work that all of us want to do. I had a great (and LONG! Okay Day Two of Intercultural Learning. Here's hoping. Six Months in Kigali: July 2008
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 31, 2008. Un jour a Kigali. Funny how one day can go back and forth from good to bad to great. We briefly had enough water this morning to flush, one and a half times. We also got home from Claire's house to find a refridgerator (! So I was optimistic heading to the bus park, although I shouldn't have been. I've had bad bus luck as of late and have revoked my "superstar" status. On Tuesday, I waited. An hour and a half. I got to talk to my mum and Leah today! As I'm making supper tonight (...

Six Months in Kigali: too little time
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/too-little-time.html
Monday, January 26, 2009. Not too little time left here. Well, that too. But too little time to blog. I have all these great things to write about. But no time. So I'll make a list, and I'll get to them sooner or later. Moto accidents (not me, thankfully, and she's alright, even more thankfully). Music on the bus. Friends I've made (maybe with pictures). And something else I bet I forgot. Maybe I'll wait til I get back to Canada (I leave in 5 days, pretty much. Eek). February 10, 2009 at 8:01 PM. In whic...

Six Months in Kigali: in which i decide that coming home will be okay
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/in-which-i-decide-that-coming-home-will.html
Sunday, January 25, 2009. In which i decide that coming home will be okay. By this time next week, I will have my feet firmly on Canadian soil. I can't even begin to believe that my time in Rwanda is coming to an end. but I've resigned myself to going back home. To see the people I love, the people I'm coming home for. To eat good food. To shower, in hot water, every day. I hate when people write about. But God. back to *Canada*? Am I completely f* *ing crazy? I think it is inapropriet. View my complete ...

Six Months in Kigali: December 2008
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 18, 2008. A non-Africa topic (partially). Breaking away from my usual range of snippets of life in Rwanda for a minute, because today is a momentous occasion. Big girl turned 5 today. I cannot believe I am the mother of a five year old child. Not a baby, not a toddler, not a preschooler. A real, honest-to-goodness. How on earth did this happen? Back to Africa. I am off to Tanzania tomorrow morning (Rwandair, I do not need to be at the airport at 5am. really! Links to this post. That ba...

Six Months in Kigali: October 2008
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 31, 2008. Until I have time to write my version of last Sunday's tree-planting extravaganza, here's what Kigali's New Times. Five University graduates from Canada currently interning with several organisations in Kigali on Sunday fulfilled their pledge of planting 500 cypress trees. Before leaving their homeland in July, the Canadian group made a pact to directly offset the carbon emissions from their air travel by planting trees in their respective host countries. 8220;In fact, a running...

Six Months in Kigali: The things they carry
http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/things-they-carry.html
Wednesday, January 21, 2009. The things they carry. Babies, from the teeny newborns nestled in tightly to toddlers big enough to trot unsteadily on their own two legs struggling to escape. Tiny feet sticking out over mothers' hips, toes wiggling. On heads (cushioned with a banana leaf ring):. Baskets of produce, off to the market. Huge 100 kilograms bags of rice, flour, wheat. Branches of huge green bananas. Jerrycans of milk, water, or petrol. Hoes, shovels and saws. Anything you'd carry on your head.

Were commissioned by MCA./UNIVERSAL to build the vehicles for the Robert Zemeckis film Back to the Future. After many designs by. Three DeLorean cars were purchased, cut apart and retrofitted into Time Machines by Kevin and his team. Once complete, they rolled out ready to be photographed. There may be other time machines out there but I guarantee no one has had more fun with theirs than we have. This project has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life and the rewards continue every day.

Watercolour painting with demonstrations, help and shared experience. Notre Dame de Paris :Halfway. January 13, 2017. January 13, 2017. After another false start which I won’t go into, I decided to paint this subject in a vignette style, which I quite enjoy for a change. When there is a lot of peripheral detail which you just don’t need, this is a good way of getting rid of it and just focusing on the main subject. Blue with a dash of brown to provide the grey slate roofs, and some cadmium red pale for t...

A pebble caught my windshield as I got on the highway, and by the time I got to work, there was a 12-16 inch crack across the driver's side. I need to get it replaced, but no time, people. No time. J and I made a bid on a house that needed a lot of work, like $100K of work, and then the seller tried to get us into a bidding war, and we backed out. This life is a bit of a comedy of problems right now, but you can either laugh or cry. We are doing a lot of laughing in these parts. It really is a lovely bea...
