They're called docklets, and the whole bar, which I've set to transparent is called a docklet (I think those are the appropriate terms). It's like an advanced version of icons allowing you to customize the looks and the animation when you mouse over them. Pretty cool huh? Plus it keeps my desktop tidy. so that's a huge plus!
