Elms have oval-shaped leaves with a saw-toothed edge. That alternates in two rows pointing away from the shoot. One side of the leaf joins the stalk higher than the other. This project is the first of its kind for the Isle of Man, and we've released the source code for both the website and mobile app under the GPL v3 license. You can get the source. If you'd like to contribute patches or add additional functionality to either the web or mobile app, just fork the project on GitHub and send us a pull request and we can merge the changes back. The database is available under the Open Data Commons Attribution License.

The aim of the project is to harness the power of the public to help create a detailed profile of the Island's elm tree population, and to help identify and report trees which may be infected with Dutch Elm Disease. DEFA continues to make committed efforts to control Dutch elm disease across the island and also Phytophthora ramorum (sudden tree death) within its plantations at Ballaugh and West Baldwin. Between 1968 and 1988 England lost 75% of its elms, and even though Dutch Elm Disease has reached the IOM, effective control has meant that the IOM has lost less than 1% of its elms (2,000 elm trees).
