It's been a while, but the good news is that my complete preoccupation with composing and preparing. The score is what has prevented me from keeping this blog updated. Wednesday, January 21, 2009. Last weekend I took the bus to Riga, the capital city of Latvia, which was once the third largest port of the Soviet Union. It was a short 3.5 hour ride through the snowy countryside. Riga has a ton of gorgeous historic buildings and because it was part of the Hanseatic trading league the city has some very intricate historic elevations reminiscent of some buildings in Tallinn. I took over 200 photos over the weekend, but here are just a few for you to enjoy! Nice, simple bui...

Wednesday, October 22, 2008. Kaunas - Lithuania's Temporary Capital. This is the Town Hall Square, where many wedding parties take photos (the two main floors serve as the Palace of Weddings). The building dates back to 1542 and is nicknamed "White Swan". Here you can see parts of the old town off the main street have not been renovated yet. With the recent decline in the real estate market, it may be a while before the Old Town is fully restored. While Kaunas has not progressed as far ahead in post-Sovi...

Sunday, December 28, 2008. Is the traditional Lithuanian Christmas Eve dinner. A group of expats all gathered at my flat to celebrate. The traditional meal includes 12 dishes, one for each month (or apostle depending on who you ask). None of the dishes can have meat or dairy, but I did not follow the tradition strictly. After all, what is Christmas Eve without specialty cheeses to snack on? On Christmas Day ( Kalėdos. The best part of the day was seeing the lighting of the Vilnius TV tower. Soviet-era ne...

Friday, March 20, 2009. Naujamiestis (The New Town). About a month ago I moved to Naujamiestis, partly for budget reasons and partly to have a less touristy lifestyle. The Old Town is wonderful, but mostly inhabited by foreigners willing to pay higher rents. The shops cater to deeper wallets and the grocery stores are small with little selection. Gothic Revival mixed use building. Pedestrian connection to A. Vivulskio street. It is a dynamic neighborhood with young, old, Lithuanian, Russian and everythin...

Sunday, November 23, 2008. The First Real Snow. After today's snow storm, I have to retract my earlier post and mark today the "first real snow. I decided to enjoy the winter weather and walk to Žirmūnai to see the newer retail area. Doesn't it look so American? Of course, by the time I arrived, I was thoroughly chilled from the snow and wind and ready to get inside. And here is the building next door, a good indication of the before-renovation appearance. And on my way home (as it got quite dark), I wal...
