Interactive simulator on the effects of underwater acoustic multipath. In underwater long-range propagation there are many acoustic rays connecting an acoustic source and a distant receiver. This is called multipath. Multipath causes significant alteration of the received sound - compared to that emitted by the source which increases with distance and depends on the ocean environment (sound-speed profile). Interactive educational game based upon underwater acoustic raytracing and echolocation. Sperm whales feed on giant squids, which they detect with sound ( clicks"). The goal of the game is to help the sperm whale get as many squids as possible in a limited amount of time and with limited number of trials (clicks), while refraction is bending the ray trajectories making it hard to aim at the target. Numerical calculations are performed in real time using optimized propagation codes.

Multimedia introduction to basic physics of sound and underwater sound for the non-expert. The user can navigate through a number of topics. Each topic is presented in terms of animations, sounds and text. Concurrent narration of the displayed text helps the user to focus better on the animations and concepts. The interactive character of the tutorial is enhanced with embedded applets for creation of sounds and calculation of sound speed in seawater. Back to Shows and Activities.

Combination of game and knowledge test on underwater sound. The user is asked to help a dolphin get to her friends by answering questions. Each correct answer moves the dolphin one step forward. The game ends when the dolphin finally joins the group. Quiz questions are randomly picked from a database of multiple-choice questions related to sound and underwater acoustics. Some of the questions involve typical underwater sounds that the user is asked to listen to and identify. Back to Shows and Activities.
