Why I Do What I Do
https://www.paulcienniwa.com/news/blog/why-i-do-what-i-do
Back to all posts. Why I Do What I Do. December 26, 2011. As a somewhat moody musician, I often ask myself why I am a musician. It’s not always the most pleasant thing, and it isn’t the most lucrative. The majority of society doesn’t get it, and it takes an awful lot of work to get some intangible returns. While I don’t come from money, these fortunes have made me ask, Why me? So, I was cruising home from the Christmas Day service, and I decided to finish an exceptionally lengthy podcast of The Moth.

By Heart: how to memorize music: Table of Contents
http://internalizingmusic.blogspot.com/p/table-of-contents_30.html
By Heart: how to memorize music. One of the problems with blogging is that it's hard to create coherent content. That is, blogs post the newest item as the first item you will be reading.and then you have to go in reverse order to read in forward order (or something like that). This page is designed to give some sense of the order of the blog, functioning like a table of contents and, more or less, listing posts in the order they were posted. And so it begins. About laziness and memorization. Dr Liu make...

By Heart: how to memorize music: Dr. Bell asks a question
http://internalizingmusic.blogspot.com/2013/10/dr-bell-asks-question.html
By Heart: how to memorize music. Monday, October 14, 2013. Dr Bell asks a question. All around nice-guy composer Larry Bell. Left this comment on this blog some time ago:. I already addressed part of Larry's question in my previous post. But I'll expand on it a little bit. If you've memorized well, then it shouldn't take much effort at all to bring back pieces. If you've memorized impatiently, then it's going to be a longer road. ( Remember my story. One encounter involved a rather strange weekend in New...

By Heart: how to memorize music: Memorizing Bach and his fugues
http://internalizingmusic.blogspot.com/2013/10/memorizing-bach-and-his-fugues.html
By Heart: how to memorize music. Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Memorizing Bach and his fugues. In conservatory, I was taught to memorize Bach fugues by memorizing each voice separately. I remember doing this. It was absolutely nuts. I also vaguely remember bringing two voices together, then three, in all manners of possibilities. This was a long and arduous process, and, today, I really question the musicality and practicality of this approach. Be aware of the voice leading, but, since I wasn't memorizing...

Todd Merrell: Video
http://www.toddmerrell.com/video
Todd merrell •. Is an homage to Joseph Cornell and his film,. Amen, indeed. A frenetic, wild ride through our hectic, urban, technological days and nights, made from a mediated appropriation of an appropriation, the famous 'Amen' drum break, sampled from a YouTube video, then copied against itself at different start points and truncated to different lengths, and processed. From my recent full length video,. Every Single Day,. A romp. Guilty, naughty pleasures. Sixty Second Serenade: Friday #43. The harps...

By Heart: how to memorize music: Hands apart
http://internalizingmusic.blogspot.com/2013/10/hands-apart.html
By Heart: how to memorize music. Friday, October 18, 2013. Who needs metaphors when you have reality? Much earlier in this blog. I commented on the practice of "learning" a piece before committing it to memory. This practice creates a foundation of tactile memory while also confusing the fact that "learned" should also mean "memorized.". In this blog post. I'll ask again as I've asked numerous times in this blog: What is the ultimate goal of your memorization work? As the parable says. I am Paul Cienniwa...
