Thoughts On The Natural World
Paying Ready Attention: May 2014
http://payingreadyattention.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Thoughts On The Natural World. It probably does no harm to have a plan; to have thought about what you would like to happen, and then, with a plan in place, to do as much as you can to make it happen. That seems to be a recipe for getting the most out of the bumpy ride that is opportunity, for making sure that what little time you have is well spent. I had not planned to go to Arizona, so I thought it more necessary than usual to prepare. From this basket clutch of diversity I managed to narrow my aim do...
Paying Ready Attention: January 2015
http://payingreadyattention.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Thoughts On The Natural World. There were house sparrows bathing in the dust and barn swallows hawking for insects above our heads. Starlings, with their electric crackle voices, chattered. On the wires. The low hum of bees and hoverflies spread out from the flowerbeds, and an occasional wasp, yellow striped and predatory, flashed by. In the distance, the dull roar of waves, still pushed by yesterday’s winds, added a base background to the noises around us. The views in all directions have a kind of ephe...
Paying Ready Attention: January 2014
http://payingreadyattention.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thoughts On The Natural World. It’s a touch past six in the morning, in the dog day weekend between Christmas and New Year. It’s the time of year when the only things you can do are ones that are unimportant, but seem to get done none the less. The roads are almost empty, but perversely, I have been stationary for at least five minutes. Road works and diversions cause delays whenever and wherever they occur. I drum my fingers on the wheel and reach to take a sip of tea. I start to sing; it’s a well...
Paying Ready Attention: October 2014
http://payingreadyattention.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thoughts On The Natural World. The Hills of Doggerland. More things happen at edges than at the centre. Dusk or dawn are better times to uncover secrets than the harsh hours of midday. Spring and autumn bring out the hidden and the slow in ways that summer and winter do not. The movement from problem to solution, that mental cliff edge of creation, is so much more exciting than the routine of production. Rows of Tyneside flats, that step up the bank – not the hill – in twinned front door pairs. A flash o...
Paying Ready Attention: Stone
http://payingreadyattention.blogspot.com/2015/07/stone.html
Thoughts On The Natural World. Technically it may have not really been snow; it was just rain thickened by cold and bolstered by ice. It was January in Tasmania and by all common measures it was summer – and yet there was still frozen water falling from the sky. The wind that brought the rain was straight from the southern ocean, cold and heavy with water. It did not knock politely on the window of the car, or the windows of the small wooden chalet, and request to come in. Today the air was thick with wa...

Silver Parrot: May 2015
http://silverparrotdesigns.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 28, 2015. SJWS - Monthly Bird Walk. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. Has a monthly bird walk on the second Sunday of the month. In May, that just happened to be Mother's Day. Ryan was nice enough to let his bird-crazy mom drag him along at 8:00 AM on a Sunday morning on her first ever official bird walk. According to the guide's announcement at the end of the walk we saw or heard over 58 different species in the course of the 3 hour walk. It was such an amazing day! Ponds at the site.
npmimages: Apropos nothing in particular…

A photo a day keeps the doctor away. Saturday, 12 July 2014. Apropos nothing in particular…. 8230;but one of the joys of beach photography in relatively remote ex-industrial areas is that sometimes you get to see something like this. This is one of four peregrines that were playing in the breeze over the cliff tops – 2 adults and 2 young I think. The young were obviously practising their skills on passing gulls, and on one occasion a passing gannet! I may have to return to the location with a longer lens.

A photo a day keeps the doctor away. Wednesday, 30 July 2014. July saw my first trip to the Farne Islands in breeding season and it certainly won't be my last. I'm not sure that the colour scheme in this photo would work in my living room - but it's certainly dramatic in the proper setting. If you like bird photos I can recommend my brothers blog - especially during Wild Bird Wednesday. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. I remember that location! I think Ill be going with terns next week. 30 July 2014 at 22:35.
npmimages: Wild Bird Wednesday (2)
http://npmimages.blogspot.com/2012/10/wild-bird-wednesday-2.html
A photo a day keeps the doctor away. Tuesday, 16 October 2012. Wild Bird Wednesday (2). Still Tuesday here in the UK but I see the linky thing is working so here we go. This one is from our Swiss holiday in 2011. Given that we were in the middle of a major city there was a surprising amount of bird life on and around Lake Geneva, and as it was early summer there were lots of young birds in evidence - like this Red Breasted Merganser and her brood. See more great bird shots at Wild Bird Wednesday. Wonderf...

Paying Ready Attention - Photo Gallery. If I published a book, would you buy it? Wednesday, 24 June 2015. Wild Bird Wednesday 152 - Hoary Headed Grebe. This is the first of three Wild Bird Wednesday's that I need to organise before I head off for work related travel. So, although the familiar blue button will appear at the bottom of the page - the posts themselves will be rather briefer than normal! These rather splendid little birds are Hoary Headed Grebes, Poliocephalus poliocephalus. To visit the Fria...

Paying Ready Attention - Photo Gallery. If I published a book, would you buy it? Thursday, 27 November 2014. Neither a sky nor a mammal - Shingleback Lizard. This is a shingleback lizard - or to use the name I first knew it by, the Stumpy Tail lizard. Both names are good - its back does look like the shingles on a roof and it does have a stumpy tail. This lizard was taking some spring sunshine on board when I found him (or her) and was remarkably tolerant as I stuck the lens of a camera up its nose!

Paying Ready Attention - Photo Gallery: Tractor Lines
http://paying-ready-attention-gallery.blogspot.com/2015/08/tractor-lines.html
Paying Ready Attention - Photo Gallery. If I published a book, would you buy it? Monday, 3 August 2015. While I was wandering about at Bempton Cliffs I noticed this pattern caused by a tractor (or tractors) moving though this crop. I rather liked the abstract nature of the image. Many shots of the UK countryside (mine include) can be rather too 'chocolate box' - so I was glad to find an image that will never grace the cover of confectionaries! You can find shots from around the world at Our World Tuesday.

Paying Ready Attention - Photo Gallery. If I published a book, would you buy it? Sunday, 31 May 2015. This lichen was growing on a small shrub in the Cradle Mountain National Park in Tasmania - this kind of lichen only grows where the air is very clean. I like the muted tones in this picture - possibly caused by the light rain and heavy clouds of the day. And for January, it was cold! You can find more macro shots at Macro Monday2. And I Heart Macro. Thursday, 28 May 2015. Wednesday, 27 May 2015. You can...

Paying Ready Attention - Photo Gallery. If I published a book, would you buy it? Friday, 31 July 2015. Light from a clouded sky. When I was walking along the cliffs at Bempton, I looked North along the coast towards Filey and saw this wonderful light coming from a clouded sky. This image really does need to be looked at in a larger format - so, if you have the time, click on the image to get a better view. You can see more skies from around the world at Sky Watch Friday. Wednesday, 29 July 2015. It can b...

Paying Ready Attention
Thoughts On The Natural World. There are times when all I remember of my dreams is the colour green. Neither detail nor narrative survives my awakening, but a colour does. And even that is not entirely true, for no single colour represents the green of my dreams. I would not be able to stand in front of the walls of colour swatches, beloved by paint manufacturers and often raided by my daughter, and say, ‘That one. That’s the green from my dreams’. The dream green feels calm, but not passive. Wherever it...
