The Jamaican Brandi

Wednesday, January 8, 2014. My last Jamaican summer and some reasons why the grass is greener here (hint: it's not the heat). The first term of the school year has already gone by and I haven't even updated you on my summer! Since the summer break is during the hottest time of the year and I literally have nothing to do during those weeks, this year I got out of dodge! Kate helping a student count candies for a bar graph. The Prime Minister is a woman. Ok, Portia Simpson-Miller isn’t the Governor G...

The Jamaican Brandi: Growth

http://www.peacecorpsbrandi.blogspot.com/2012/08/growth.html

Friday, August 24, 2012. Extensive research refers to nearly 4 months of mental documentation of all of the cases I’ve encountered that support my theory (the technical term for this kind of research is “very scientific”). The ants carrying a dead cockroach up the wall in my living room. And out the window. Me and my 11 year old bestie. Year Independence Day celebrations on August 6th. We came out of it unscathed, and below is a shot of many of my towns people posing for a very black, green, and gold...

The Jamaican Brandi: July 2012

http://www.peacecorpsbrandi.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 7, 2012. It's gonna be a great 2 years. Here are some questions and statements Jamaicans have said to me that are actually all English words, but definitely required some further explanation:. 8220;Miss, yuh a wear test glass? 8221; = “Miss, do you wear glasses? 8220;You can share your lunch? 8221; = “Can you serve yourself? 8221; (p.s. my response to this question was, “Umm, with whom? 8220;Miss, how many parts of your ear are bore? The cultural item (a dance). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The Jamaican Brandi: M'deh ah

http://www.peacecorpsbrandi.blogspot.com/2013/04/mdeh-ah.html

Saturday, April 27, 2013. Note: I really tried to post fun pictures of all of these events here, but the slow internet is against me! See my facebook page for pics, and I will try to update this post with images later. Not that I’m counting down or anything, but I just passed the 11 month mark in my service (13 months on island)! It’s unbelievable how quickly it has gone by. They say that the days are long but the years are short, and I couldn’t agree more. 8221; (What’s going on? One of my favorite PC s...

The Jamaican Brandi: June 2012

http://www.peacecorpsbrandi.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 15, 2012. I do not poop in a hole. I have now been at my permanent work site since swearing in as an official Peace Corps Volunteer on May 18. The teachers and principal at my school. The cultural differences are easier to adjust to than the political ones. Somehow I think it makes it harder that I have most of the comforts of home here. I have electricity and running water, so why can’t I have hot water and internet too? It seems like if I had to poop in a hole and read by candlelight I mig...

The Jamaican Brandi: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

http://www.peacecorpsbrandi.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-good-bad-and-ugly.html

Thursday, June 27, 2013. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Today I attempt to say something of substance to you about Jamaica, while still remaining optimistic. I usually spend my time here trying to keep friends and family up to date with the day to day happenings and I fail to really tell you anything of import about what I see and learn here. I try to focus on “the good” as often as I remember to-mostly for my sanity. As for “the bad”, I know I never leave you wondering. I’m talking about the coc...

Best Day Ever: April 2013

http://bestdayever11.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Everyday is the best day. Friday, April 12, 2013. With the end of my service quickly approaching (although sometimes it still seems forever away) I'm constantly thinking of the first world and how ahh-mazing it's going to be when I get back, aka "The Return". I fantasize about all the things that I'm going to do when I'm home and how the options will seem endless! Only makes pondering the future more inviting and too often I find myself thinking about "The Return". 2 Little to no. Obscene amounts of peop...

Best Day Ever: July 2011

http://bestdayever11.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Everyday is the best day. Saturday, July 30, 2011. Last week was our shadowing experience, so we had our first independent field trip! Like tiny baby birds leaving the nest for the first time, we are finally free to fly! Well, for 2.5 days, that is and it wasn't exactly on our own, as two other trainees were heading in the same direction, and one trainee and I were actually going to stay with the same Volunteer. Our independence is something given to us in very small doses. Was sold out ( not. After we l...

http://bestdayever11.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Everyday is the best day. Thursday, July 26, 2012. Jamerican (Don't hate me for using that term, because I already hate myself). In other words, nothing is surprising; it just is. To give the non-PCV an idea of what I mean, here are a few things that used to be surprising, but are now just standard everyday life:. Greeting everyone you see – known or unknown. If you see someone 100 yards away, out working on their farm, you are rude if you do not look over and give them a wave. Travelling – If ther...

Best Day Ever: December 2012

http://bestdayever11.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Everyday is the best day. Thursday, December 13, 2012. I need cake. Must have cake. A doughnut could suffice as well. It’s that kind of a week. I don’t think I’ve craved a piece of cake in my adult life. It used to be to the point where I didn’t think I’d ever want a piece of cake again. After working in an office where every other day there was a reason to have cake, à la Office Space. 8221; * You know what I mean. These ladies feel me. Then they leave. And the darkness comes. (slightly dramatic? And I ...

Best Day Ever: February 2010

http://bestdayever11.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Everyday is the best day. Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Those are really the only ways I know to say thank you, and I have no idea where I am going, but I am so excited to say that the Peace Corps changed their rule so that as long as I promise to get my 30 hours of ESL teaching over 3 months, I can be nominated for a region before I actually get all the hours! I just have to make sure that my next class has more than enough registrants! Good chat with friends.

Best Day Ever: March 2013

http://bestdayever11.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Everyday is the best day. Thursday, March 7, 2013. An unfinished post from January 2012 -. Lost in Translation - or Simply Just Lost. Don't get me wrong, it has been very useful to learn the language here, and to speak it with the locals if you can (and dare). But even if you do this, you can miss a lot, because a lot of what is being communicated can only be understood because you live and grew up in Jamaica. I decided to post this unfinished because, whoa! What a difference a year makes! Which if you a...
