After Calafate, Argentina, we continued north along old Route 40 to Chaltén, a town of 1,200 residents found in the northern-most part of Glacier National Park. The town is there only to support the tourism in the area: hiking, backpacking, ice-climbing around the beautiful peaks of Mt Fitz Roy. This was our view driving in on the bus:. We struck out for a 4 day hike and the first day was absolutely gorgeous! I don’t even have to enhance these pictures because the views were perfect! So that was Day 1.

Hiking the “W” at Torres del Paine. For 5 days and 4 nights, Kail and I trekked in our first Patagonian landscape: The Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. There is a very popular trail there called the W based on its shape which takes you deep into 3 different mountain valleys. The torres (towers) are the spiky rock formations on the right. Our first destination: Camp Grey on the northern end of Lake Grey. It will literally knock you off your feet, and sweeping down off the glaciers, it is also Cold.

We’ll start in the Train Cemetery where 60-80 year old trains stand abandoned, relics from the mining days along tracks that stretch into Chile. We had lunch at an old salt hotel, since abandoned due to pollution problems. The bricks and mortar are all made of salt. This is the world’s largest salt flat. Next weekend I will be in the throws of the Corvallis Fall Festival. It's getting really busy and my check list is ever growing. And even though it seems a bit overwhelming, I am absolutely loving it! Tonight we are off to see Pretty Lights, who I hear puts on a stellar show.
