Peaceful Green Day: My green-living winter preparations
http://www.peacefulgreenday.com/2015/03/my-green-living-winter-preparations.html
My green-living winter preparations. Winter can be a time of huge power bills, wet clothes and a barren garden. Here's what's been going on in our house to minimise these problems. Garden, i.e. what are we going to eat all winter? We are so lucky in New Zealand to be able to grow our vegetables year-round, and it's perfectly possible to provide all a family's green vegetables from a standard back yard garden. It doesn't take consistent hard work, just short bursts of it - and good timing. As I write on t...

See them at my dedicated NZ chicken-keeping blog, www.keepingchickensnz.com. There's also a Keeping Chickens NZ facebook page here. You don't need to be a facebook member to see it. One-Wattle, a favourite chicken featured in the post mentioned below. Posted by Andrea Graves. Subscribe to: Post Comments ( Atom ). I used to write about backyard chickens. Tying s...
Peaceful Green Day: Books your boy will love to read
http://www.peacefulgreenday.com/2015/06/books-your-boy-will-love-to-read.html
Books your boy will love to read. Recently Jack (11) said wistfully that he wished there was a computer programme that could make him forget things. What would you like to forget? I'd like to forget every book I've ever read," he said. I knew what he meant, and he agreed that he wished he could read them afresh all over again. I tried to reassure him that there must be many good books he hasn't read yet. "Don't lie," he told me. "There will never. Be anything as good as Harry Potter.". The Killer Underpa...
Peaceful Green Day: Living in an armpit city: the bonuses
http://www.peacefulgreenday.com/2015/04/living-in-armpit-city-bonuses.html
Living in an armpit city: the bonuses. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand, a city which has a reputation for being foggy, damp and generally not a happening kind of place. Here's a taste of some of the things we've been doing recently. Annual 'Balloons over Waikato' Festival. The balloon dipped its basket in the lake! Pumpkin Carnival at the Hamilton Gardens. Weetbix tryathlon for children. I've written about this beautiful place here. With some lovely images . but here are some more recent ones:. This blog...
Peaceful Green Day: A garden visit like no other
http://www.peacefulgreenday.com/2012/09/a-garden-visit-like-no-other.html
A garden visit like no other. I'd love to show you all the photos, but a large electrical storm has come over our place so I have to shut down the computer! Here's just two photos to whet your appetite. The palisades of the Te Parapara Garden. Tulips in the Italian Renaissance garden an hour or so after high winds and rain. It's hard for me to believe I can take photos like these when there is in fact a white fungus growing in my camera lens! Posted by Andrea Graves. Subscribe to: Post Comments ( Atom ).

Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch. Growing food in suburban Melbourne. Garden recipes : Soup and artichokes. Weekend harvest 4th May 2014 →. Garden Share Collective May 2014. May 3, 2014. The garden is looking a little bare at the moment. It’s in between seasons for me, because I had a fairly disappointing harvest of summer vegies, and I’ve been slow to get the winter crop in. What am I planting? Leek seedlings (and more broccoli). Broad beans (and weeds). Snow peas poking their heads up. Another few polycultur...

Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch. Growing food in suburban Melbourne. Garden Share Collective May 2014. Spring surprises →. Weekend harvest 4th May 2014. May 5, 2014. Like last week, my harvest this week was pretty small, due to it being ‘tween seasons. I pulled two pumpkins, that are mature enough to eat, but still small and not growing much now in the colder weather. I have two still on the vines, which I’m hoping will fill out soon. Pumpkins with my hand, for comparison. Flowers for the kitchen table. It...

Tea harvest! | Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch
https://notyournansvegiepatch.wordpress.com/2014/10/25/tea-harvest
Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch. Growing food in suburban Melbourne. October 25, 2014. Last year I put a lot of time into planning and planting my perennial patch, and now it is really coming into its own. I picked plants based on what I wanted to eat, drink and look at, and got some help from a book my Mum and her partner gave me for Christmas called Grow Your Own Drugs! The rhubarb is soldiering on as always, and I’ll be making some rhubarb and apple stew for Sky soon. I’ve got sorrel coming out of my...

Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch. Growing food in suburban Melbourne. Newer posts →. Rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb! March 20, 2014. I have been growing rhubarb for about 4 years now, from crowns that have been in my partner’s family for a long, long time. I started with just one crown. On the weekend when I was splitting the rhubarb as part of a bigger edible perennial project, I discovered that I now have 10 crowns! Very sad rhubarb in a pot for a friend. Healthy sunny rhubarb to be moved t a later date. Last sum...

Spring surprises | Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch

Not Your Nan's Vegie Patch. Growing food in suburban Melbourne. Weekend harvest 4th May 2014. October 4, 2014. Spring is what happens when you’re doing other things. Or something like that. As usual I’ve spent the whole on winter thinking about what my summer garden would look like, and then in the last 6 weeks I got so focussed on work and learning to code and family things and life generally, that I didn’t noticed that Spring has made it’s way to the northern suburbs. I got a few surprises today, now t...

Peaceful Green Day
The year's nearly finished and we've had the hottest, driest November and December for years. The grass is brown and water restrictions are in force. It's hard to believe that in early spring (September) we went for a bush walk near Te Aroha, and everything was rain and mud! Oh, for a good day of rain for our vegetable garden right now . Here's a small waterfall that took my fancy during the walk:. On the way home we stopped in Morrinsville, where I was quite taken by their stunning street-art fake cows.
