New haven to northampton. Recently, i got out for a weekend ride up to massachusetts. what a treat it is to get out to do literally nothing but ride with essentially no agenda. i had a location in mind, northampton, to be exact, but it was only a vague destination. ultimately, i'd never make it there, but that wasn't the point. There's water in them sandhills. With 150 miles to alliance the winds changed to a stiff 10-15mph out of the west. not exactly a good time but i had no choice but grind away the miles. if i had to spend an extra day or so among the sandhills i'd be just fine with it, or so i thought,. All night it the only sound i heard was the occasional wind blowing the tall grass against my tarp, which is about is about as effective as light rain in lulling you to sleep. delightful. It's been hot. prohibitively hot. the kind of hot that forces you indoors and takes away your motivation to do anything other than sweat and be crabby. it's not fun by any means and i've never sweat as much as i have in the past week or so. i'm disgusting. i guess it's all part of the adventure. Frustrating is a pretty accurate way to describe ohio and indiana. finally. All negativity aside, let's talk about the positives. the grass! Was amazing. just amazing. Southeast, down along the river on a hot morning. Mostly downhill on newly paved roads. Even Gut Road, which used to have a “Travel at your own risk” sign now has a coat of chipseal. Then down to the Conewago and then the climb of climbs. I even hiked for a couple of minutes just to stretch and give my bumm some air.

Saturday, March 26th, 2011. For those of you who thought my mangled carcass was slowly decomposing in a swampy roadside bog in Louisiana, I've got news for you: 5,500 miles, 4.75 months, 5 flat tires, 10 states and 31 host homes later I'm very alive and exceedingly well in KEY WEST, FLORIDA! To be honest, I am probably more amazed than anyone that I actually followed through with it.and survived! At the outset I'd speculated that my chance of arriving in Key West was maybe.
