In the months following his return to Blackburn he wrote a description of his journey initially calling it his Pennine Campaign and after showing it to colleagues in his office set the manuscript on one side. In the 1980’s he became somewhat of a celebrity following the publication of his Lakeland Fell Pictorial Guides. His Pennine Way Companion. And his Coast to Coast Walk Pictorial Guide. And he featured in TV programmes. In 1938; exactly as it was written all those years earlier.

Ordnance Survey has been working with the Pennine Journey Supporters Club to update its popular OS Explorer series of maps to show the new ‘Pennine Journey’. After the publication of OL 2 last year we have heard from the Ordnance Survey that another Explorer Map with the Pennine Journey route on it, OL19 Howgill Fells and Upper Eden Valley, has been published. Below are the anticipated release dates of further OS maps on which will be the route. Yorkshire Dales northern and central areas - June 2015.

The Ravenber Way is a 210½ mile (336.8 km) long-distance coast-to-coast walk across northern England from Ravenglass in Cumbria to Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland. Other route options and alternative routes have been included in the book 'Coast to Coast on the Ravenber Way'. Wainwright always maintained that people should be encouraged to plan out new routes, to experience the joy of participation, and to be thrilled with the challenge of a long-distance walk.
