Monday, November 23, 2009. Change is all around South America. You see it in every neighborhood, every city, out in the countryside. Nevertheless, change, in the MONETARY regard, is far more difficult, and often impossible to find. In many countries, trying to pay for something with bills as low as the equivalent of two or five dollars, I would have to linger as employees scrambled to get change from their friends in neighboring stores. Her blatant, casual reluctance was infuriarating. Not So La Paz.
