During a financial strain, offering care to animal companions can be painful. With just one healthy cat the monthly expenses of just food and litter can reach $60 or more per month. Medications for animal companions can reach in the hundreds. Common flea, teeth, and grooming treatments can increase cost more. These expenses can be used elsewhere to cover bills, transportation, and food. Even the smallest amounts bring huge differences to families in need:. Food for a month for up to two average size cats.

Updated: January 27, 2015. In an effort to understand the reasons people abandon their animal companions we interviewed several rescue agencies and shelters. With unsurprising but very distressed responses. 60% of the shelters stated the reason animals are dropped at their door was due to family relocation.
