The Lonely Goatherd

Sunday, July 8, 2012. Food work is HARD. I've spent the last three weeks trying to figure out how to articulate what I want to do with my life. No big deal, right? Of course it is. I lost my job at the farm about three weeks ago "due to financial constraints" and am choosing to view this as an opportunity to work closer to my true interests. What those are (and whether an appropriate job exists) are yet to be determined. Isn't it amazing how being outside just slows time down? This is the big question!

The Lonely Goatherd: With a View of Vulcan

http://www.philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2012/01/with-view-of-vulcan.html

Wednesday, January 18, 2012. With a View of Vulcan. And this is where that mature balance comes in. I woke up on Tuesday and KNEW - I just knew it - that I don't fit into this place as I've seen it thus far. The same issues reared their ugly little heads: wow, all these really cool people and this interesting movement as it happens here has nothing to do with anyone not traditionally of privilege. Where is the history in Birmingham's sustainable ag? I'm going to the SSAWG. The green will be out again soon.

The Lonely Goatherd: Next Steps (and Some Previous Ones Too)

http://www.philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2011/11/next-steps-and-some-previous-ones-too.html

Monday, November 7, 2011. Next Steps (and Some Previous Ones Too). How does grassroots food justice happen without a fancy .org or .edu to foot the bill and call the board meeting? At this point I know fully well that non-profits and academia only play a peripheral role in what I see as food justice, what I see as my albeit-undefined greater Goal. Let's be real, though: how do you find a job that way? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Do-gooder trying to be closer to the dirt under her feet.

The Lonely Goatherd: Rainy Day Musing?

http://www.philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2012/02/today-is-cloudy-grey-day-in-ham-yeah-i.html

Wednesday, February 1, 2012. Today is a cloudy, grey day in the 'ham (yeah I used a terrible nickname for my new home), and as such I have been relegated to taking the day off instead of plowing through the muddy, six-inch-deep clay of my employer's land. The past week has provided much food for thought, and only now have I gotten the chance to actually sit and process any of it. (But first .). Good morning, Vulcan! I take some inspiration from this Chicago honey co-op. Or the Farmer-Veteran Coalition.

The Lonely Goatherd: Dinner at Golden Chopstix

http://www.philosophiesofafoodie.blogspot.com/2011/12/dinner-at-golden-chopstix.html

Thursday, December 29, 2011. Dinner at Golden Chopstix. My dad and I went out for dinner tonight - no particular reason, really; he just wanted Thai food. So I unwittingly hop into the car, we roll out of Irmo and into the relative darkness of West Columbia. He knows how to see beyond the quiet and what looks like slight decrepitude to the meaningful community knowledge, and I really admire that. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Do-gooder trying to be closer to the dirt under her feet.

Charred for Life: Life with Brian

http://koppa-kabana.blogspot.com/2009/09/brian.html

A Journey of Culinary Mishaps. Thursday, September 17, 2009. Yes, I do name my plants; I think that's an entirely different post altogether. Brian was given to me as a cutting by my work colleague, who has managed to nurse Brian's mom for four years! In which Francie Nolan is in awe of her neighborhood foliage, which manages to grow through all types of weather, urbanization patterns, and negative treatment, just like herself. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Autumn, grace, peace. Food work is HARD.

Charred for Life: Tuesday Night with Rupen Rao

http://koppa-kabana.blogspot.com/2009/09/tuesday-night-with-rupen-rao.html

A Journey of Culinary Mishaps. Tuesday, September 15, 2009. Tuesday Night with Rupen Rao. I spent this evening at Simply September, Simply Indian. A cooking class hosted by Whole Foods. Our teacher this evening was Mr. Rupen Rao. Of Simply Indian, LLC. Check out his website if you have a chance; he has tons of easy-to-follow recipes. The kaddu ka shorba was my favorite of all the dishes! The dahi murgh was very spicy. Mr. Rao advised using bone-in chicken thighs for optimum flavor. Though the...Kesaribat...

Charred for Life: Green beans paliya

http://koppa-kabana.blogspot.com/2009/09/green-beans-paliya.html

A Journey of Culinary Mishaps. Thursday, September 10, 2009. While wandering around farmers' markets this summer, I've seen a lot of beans. So many that it's overwhelming. There are regular green beans, yellow wax beans, borlotti beans, and my personal favorite, the cranberry bean. The most interesting - and kind of heartbreaking - aspect of this bean is that when cooked, it loses its pink coloration in favor of a muted brown. 16 oz packet of frozen French green beans. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds. Is in the Air.

A Journey of Culinary Mishaps. Wednesday, September 23, 2009. I'm taking a short break from the blog, namely because I'm sneezing.
