P4P: Why Charities Might Differ in Effectiveness by Many Orders of Magnitude

http://philosophyforprogrammers.blogspot.com/2014/01/why-charities-might-differ-in.html

Why Charities Might Differ in Effectiveness by Many Orders of Magnitude. Brian has recently argued. That because "flow-through" (second-order) effects are so uncertain, charities don't (on expectation) differ in their effectiveness by more than a couple orders of magnitude. I give some arguments here about why that might be wrong. 1 Why does anything differ by many orders of magnitude? Taken from Gibrat's Law for (All) Cities. Is mayoral talent distributed exponentially? 110 cdot 1.05 cdot 0.98$. Log lef...

P4P: On my inability to improve decision making

http://philosophyforprogrammers.blogspot.com/2014/01/on-my-inability-to-improve-decision.html

On my inability to improve decision making. Summary: It’s been suggested that improving decision making is an important thing for altruists to focus on, and there are a wide variety of computer programs which aim to improve clinician decision making ability. Since I earn to give. Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain. - Friedrich Schiller. If people are better at making decisions, then we will be better at a whole range of things, making decision-support technology an important priority f...

P4P: If you want to start a startup, go work for someone else

http://philosophyforprogrammers.blogspot.com/2014/09/if-you-want-to-start-startup-go-work.html

If you want to start a startup, go work for someone else. When you look online for advice about entrepreneurship, you will see a lot of "just do it":. The best way to get experience. is to start a startup. So, paradoxically, if you're too inexperienced to start a startup, what you should do is start one. That's a way more efficient cure for inexperience than a normal job. - Paul Graham, Why to Not Not Start a Startup. Specifically, I would make two claims:. It is clear that the average person learns some...

P4P: An Improvement to "The Impossibility of a Satisfactory Population Ethics"

http://philosophyforprogrammers.blogspot.com/2013/12/an-improvement-to-impossibility-of.html

An Improvement to "The Impossibility of a Satisfactory Population Ethics". Gustaf Arrhenius has published a series of impossibility theorems involving ethics. His most recent is The Impossibility of a Satisfactory Population Ethics. Which basically shows that several intuitive premises yield a stronger version of the repugnant conclusion. I will finish the analogy with addition by specifying that welfare is isomorphic to the integers. Ie $X leq X$ and $X leq Y, Y leq Z$ implies that $X leq Z$. Notabl...

P4P: May 2013

http://philosophyforprogrammers.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

How to Create a Donor-Advised Fund. There are a lot. Of charities. So many, in fact, that some would-be altruists are struck with the alliterative analysis paralysis. And end up not donating at all. A tax vehicle known as a "Donor-advised fund" (DAF) allows you to get the best of both worlds: you can donate to charity, with all the psychological and tax benefits that go along with that decision, while still holding off on your decision as to which charity is best. There are interesting questions. As well...

Vegan Life Quest: October 2013

http://veganlifequest.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 31, 2013. Elimination Diet - Day 40. Saturday, October 26, 2013. Elimination Diet - Day 35. I had Jungle Curry from Thai Noodles today and it was amazing. That's one of my favorite meals ever and so far I feel fine, so that's good news. I asked for tomatoes instead of mushrooms (haven't added back in mushrooms yet). I've been fine eating tomatoes and other nightshade vegetables for a while now, and I thought, "oh! I can have tomato soup! Friday, October 25, 2013. Without mushrooms.)...

Vegan Life Quest: Elimination Diet Round 2

http://veganlifequest.blogspot.com/2014/11/elimination-diet-round-2.html

Friday, November 7, 2014. Elimination Diet Round 2. Well after several months of feeling sick most mornings, I decided to give the elimination diet another go, but this time an easier and shorter version. Instead of starting off avoiding every food that is commonly troublesome to people, I'm just going to avoid the foods that were sort of iffy for me the first time around. I'll be avoiding:. Nuts, except peanuts. Lemon, lime juice. Soymilk (but not other forms of soy). November 8, 2014 at 8:50 AM.

Vegan Life Quest: April 2015

http://veganlifequest.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 13, 2015. The low FODMAP diet is hard. I don't know if it's harder than the elimination diet I did before, but perhaps my expectations were that this one would be MUCH easier and it's not really. I didn't know I would feel so drained/weak not eating foods with FODMAPs. It's also really hard to eat enough to feel full. My GI symptoms are better, but mentally and energy-wise I feel worse. Saturday, April 4, 2015. Update on Low FODMAP Diet. The Low FODMAP diet I started.

Vegan Life Quest: Low FODMAP Diet

http://veganlifequest.blogspot.com/2015/03/low-fodmap-diet.html

Sunday, March 22, 2015. Stomach problems persisted, so I saw a doctor at the Digestive Health center, who recommended trying an acid reflux medicine for 2 weeks (didn't work), and then the low FODMAP diet, so that's what I'm starting today. This is similar to, but sounds easier than, the Elimination Diet that I followed. Earlier. I should be able to get through the whole thing in about a month and a half, so well before Mad City Vegan Fest. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Vegan Life Quest: November 2013

http://veganlifequest.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 30, 2013. Elimination Diet - Day 70 part 2. I'm still having issues even though I went without strawberries today :-/ Was it the walnuts I added to the fudge to make them "healthy"? And the chestnut soup last night? Nuts were iffy the first time I added them in, but then I added in almond milk again and that's been going well. I don't really like plain nuts, so I didn't try them again except for the ones I added to the fudge. Once I'm feeling better, I'll add in gluten. What Psychology...

Vegan Life Quest: December 2013

http://veganlifequest.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 29, 2013. Elimination Diet - Day 99. Good news: I had a green smoothie today with my NEW VITAMIX! So excited to use that more often. It's really fun to kick it up into high gear and watch it pulverize the kale, and also fun to think about how healthy it's making me. Tuesday, December 24, 2013. Elimination Diet - Day 94. Thursday, December 12, 2013. Elimination Diet - Day 82. I made it to the last item! I was so excited that I made it to the last item, that I must have been thinking I can...

These are the philosophies which I have learnt from many intellectuals and books.I think many will agree with my views. Tuesday, November 29, 2005. I don't have much knowledge to talk about God and I think that my notion about God will keep changing if I contemplate or learn more about this most abstract topic on earth.I will add some more information whenever I find some useful stuff .
