Things to Make and Do: The Language of the Silent World
http://janehousham123.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-language-of-silent-world.html
Wednesday, 13 May 2015. The Language of the Silent World. Feed I recently posted an image from an Edwardian booklet on British Sign Language, 'The Language of the Silent World'. This was first published in 1914 and the last edition was printed in 1929. Until it was superseded in 1938 by a new pamphlet published by the National Institute for the Deaf, this was the mostly widely available source of information on sign language. One of the big questions I have about sign language is how the grammar works?

Things to Make and Do: Kate Dobson -- a stranger in a photograph
http://janehousham123.blogspot.com/2015/05/kate-dobson-stranger-in-photograph.html
Friday, 15 May 2015. Kate Dobson - a stranger in a photograph. I haven't 'investigated' any photos for ages, so at the weekend I dipped into the drawerful of old photos that I got from my Mum and picked one more or less at random - this is it, above. It was the second one I looked at and I stuck with it because it had a name written on the back. The name was Kate Dobson and there was a date, October 1877. What else could I find out about Kate Dobson? But there was a major falling out between Ralph and hi...

Saturday, 11 January 2014. Claremont - can anybody identify this house and children? I found this photograph of a house called Claremont among my mother's things. I'm posting it here on the chance that someone may come across it and be able to identify either the house or the children. I'd love to know where it is and what the connection is to my family. I think there must be one. Thanks! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Please visit my art website. Claremont - can anybody identify this house and c.

Saturday, 31 May 2014. 20th Century Design Fair at Farnham. Last Saturday saw us getting up at 4.45am so that we could be at Farnham Maltings by 7am to set up our stall at the 20th Century Design Fair. We were all ready so we just stumbled into the car and off. What a (relative! Pleasure the M25 is at that time of the morning. By Irene and Gordon Hopwood, which is a fantastic book containing many tantalising photos of rare Shorter pieces. This represents a venture into design and retail! It's quite a lon...

Things to Make and Do: Last day of Open Studios 2014
http://janehousham123.blogspot.com/2014/09/last-day-of-open-studios-2014.html
Sunday, 28 September 2014. Last day of Open Studios 2014. Today is the last day that my studio will be open for Herts Open Studios 2014. There's still time to pop round (until 6pm tonight - see details at www.janehousham.co.uk). It's been great being 'forced' to spend hours on end in here and I've found it quite stimulating. I finished the 'dream' collage above this morning and I'm going to work on another two this afternoon. Stream of visitors so most of the looking and jumping is quite pointless. Sound...

Things to Make and Do: November 2013
http://janehousham123.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, 23 November 2013. Almost by return of post I received an A4 envelope emblazoned with animal-welfare stickers:. Inside was a large photocopy of the arm-wrestling scene from The Family Way. A 1966 British film starring Hayley Mills and Hywel Bennett (with an original score by Paul McCartney):. On the back was a wonderful note from Morrissey, written in his beautiful handwriting and with a drawing at the end. The book he mentions was a signed copy of Terence Stamp's memoir,. With a plan in mind.

Things to Make and Do: December 2013
http://janehousham123.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, 26 December 2013. I hope everyone had a lovely day yesterday. Somehow or other, perhaps not quite. By mutual consent, it was decided that we would spend yesterday entirely 'off Net'. Our internet connection was switched off at the hub and although it had been mooted that all phones, iPads, tablets and gizmos would be collected in a box and locked away, we decided to take it on trust that we would all stay away from the internet for the day. The 'children' were in inverted commas just above as I...

Things to Make and Do: April 2014
http://janehousham123.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, 6 April 2014. Milo and the Reverend Bott. When I was going through the big, messy drawer full of the photos and postcards I rescued from my Mum's shed up in Richmond (Yorkshire) three years ago, I was surprised to find this beautiful photograph in amongst the snaps of 1920s Torquay and postcards of Piccadilly Circus. This young black boy is immaculately dressed in a smart overcoat, button boots, gloves, and a hat. So the question remains, how did Milo's photo come to be in my mum's shed? In among...
