The history of the Jewish community and Synagogue in Piketberg. The South African Jewish community were Russian refugees from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. They arrived here after the Turkish war in 1877. These refugees arrived possession-less on African soil. From the refugees that arrived in Cape Town, approximately 100 Jewish families settled in Oudshoorn between 1881 and 1890. The Piketberg Museum opened its doors thanks to Mr. A.J. (Appie) Liebenberg who donated his home and most of its contents to the Bergrivier Municipality in 1983 after his passing. Mrs. Anna Eksteen, gave life to the museum then situated at 4 Hoog Street and the museum was officially opened in 1985 by the town clerk, Mr. Flip van Niekerk. The town of Piketberg originated in 1836 when Sir Benjamin D'Urban, then Governor of the Cape Colony, donated the farm "Grootfontein" to the church council in the area whom had already started to build on the land. The town derives its name from the Dutch word "piket" which means outpost. The current Dutch Reform Church was designed by Charl Otto Hager from 1880 to 1882. The church was designed based on popular neo-gothic architecture and still remains one of the focal points of the town today.

This 110 metre (347 ft) single steel girder bridge fits the Berg River perfectly, but was not intended to be used over the Berg River at all, but in Australia.
