Travel Guide to the Pitcairn Islands, South Pacific
http://pitcairn.southpacific.org/index.html
Oeno and Ducie Map. Legendary Pitcairn, last refuge of HMS. S mutinous crew, is the remotest populated place in the South Pacific. This tiny colony, founded in 1790 by nine fugitive Englishmen and 19 Polynesians, is presently more than 200 years old. It's one of the ironies of history that Pitcairn, born out of treason to the British crown, was the first Pacific island to become a British colony (in 1838) and remains today the last remnant of that empire in the Pacific. Only settlement, historic relics.
Map of Henderson Island, the Pitcairn Islands, South Pacific
http://pitcairn.southpacific.org/islands/henderson.html
Oeno and Ducie Map. Henderson, a 31-square-km elevated atoll 169 km east-northeast of Pitcairn, is the largest of the Pitcairn Islands. The island measures 5 km by 10 km and is flanked by 15-meter-high coral cliffs on the west, south, and east sides. Geologists believe that Henderson was uplifted after a volcanic eruption on Pitcairn over a million years ago which tilted the earth's crust slightly with its weight. There are four endemic species of land birds on the island: a black flightless rail (Hender...

Transportation to the Pitcairn Islands, South Pacific
http://pitcairn.southpacific.org/travel/gettingthere.html
Oeno and Ducie Map. Talk of building an airstrip on Pitcairn has floated around for decades, and in 2001 it was announced that the residents had finally agreed to surrender a good part of their farmland for this purpose. Whether construction will actually go ahead remains to be seen but such a facility would change the island forever. The landing at Bounty Bay, Pitcairn Island. The anchorage at Down Rope could be used in the event of north or northeast winds, but there's no way up the cliff except the pr...

Catamaran fishing boats at Apia. Until the mid-1990s, Samoa's economy was battered by hurricanes, agricultural decline, and government mismanagement, but in recent years the economy has grown at an annual rate of around 5 percent. Two-thirds of the workforce is engaged in subsistence agriculture—fisheries and agriculture make up more than a third of the gross domestic product, the highest such proportion in the Pacific. Samoa consists of four inhabited and five uninhabited islands totaling 2,842 square km, a bit bigger than the American state of Rhode Island. Unlike most Pacific countries, which are scattered across vast areas, all of these islands are in one main cluster, which makes getting around fairly easy. Together these two account for 96 percent of Samoa's land area and 99 percent of the population. Savai'i ...
Conversion to Christianity and Commercialization of Samoa, South Pacific
http://samoa.southpacific.org/samoa/conversion.html
Although several Dutch and French explorers sighted Samoa during the 18th century, none had any impact until Rev. John Williams of the London Missionary Society called at Savai'i aboard the Messenger of Peace in 1830. The ruling chief, Malietoa Vainu'upo, welcomed Williams, and by 1840 most Samoans had been converted to Protestantism. The first central government was formed by a group of district chiefs at Mulinu'u in 1868. During the 1870s, German businessmen purchased large tracts of family land fr...
