The Great Barrier Reef. The 1,500 mile long Great Barrier Reef is at least an hour or so offshore, so you have to take a boat to get to it from a coastal city. We chose Cairns. Our hotel was comfortable enough, but the architecture recalled a modern central court penitentiary. Restaurant table tops even have navigational maps of islands along the Barrier Reef. As a bonus, a four foot monitor lizard came with the room. After days of snorkeling, a final dinner and away.

Seafood and Eat It. Gili Meno sports a heavenly cornucopia of fresh caught marine creatures at each restaurant along the beach. A dinner knocks you back about US$7. You pick your fish, prawn, squid, tuna, or whatnot and it’s grilled while you wait. Flaneur loathes blog shots of cute children, domestic animals, or plates of food. But this fresh caught grilled entire cuttlefish merited an exception. As a courtesy, fly paper traps insects to keep them off the menu.
