Es gibt 4 akute Porphyrien:. Die häufigste ist die akut-intermittierende Porphyrie. Die zweithäufigste ist die Porphyria variegata. Die dritthäufigste ist die hereditäre Koproporphyrie. Sehr selten ist die Doss-Porphyrie (Synonym: ALA-Dehydratase-Mangel- Porphyrie). Während Porphyrieschüben können Nervosität, Reizbarkeit, Schlaflosigkeit und sogar schwere neurotische und psychische Funktionsstörungen auftreten. Falls jemand mit einer Porphyrie keinen akuten Schub hat, ist er jedoch psychisch gesund.
