Portzers in Haiti

Sunday, October 27, 2013. Have we accomplished anything? When we agreed to come to Haiti for FHM, we knew we were to be here only temporarily. We were on location to help out until a decision could be made on the next guesthouse manager. As I write this, the decision making process is still in progress. We are orienting another interim manager over the weekend. He will work at least for November and December. A bit of reflection on our time here -. We've enjoyed getting to know staff members, Yvette and ...

Portzers in Haiti: Better use for styrofoam

http://www.portzersinhaiti.blogspot.com/2013/10/better-use-for-styrofoam.html

Saturday, October 26, 2013. Better use for styrofoam. View from the Christianville site, near Gressier, looking east towards the mountains. Many of you know Dale and Ingram from their days at CODEP. I first met them there and had been interested in visiting their new site. On Friday, they spent time with us at Christianville, where they now work. Christianville is famous for its goats, chickens, and fish (a church in our neighborhood in Apex sponsors some of the goat farming. No, that is not Kreyol.

Portzers in Haiti: Block Making and Other Sites in Jakmel

http://www.portzersinhaiti.blogspot.com/2013/10/block-making-and-other-sites-in-jakmel.html

Monday, October 14, 2013. Block Making and Other Sites in Jakmel. For those of you who don't know Jakmel, also spelled Jacmel, it's a formerly lovely town on the south coast of Haiti. It's basic "fabric" is spectacular, reminding US visitors of New Orleans, but it's suffered terribly over the years, economically and from the earthquake. There are quite a few artisan shops with paintings, paper mache, for which Jacmel is famous, and other crafts. Grinding limestone quarried in the nearby mountains. Finall...

Portzers in Haiti: Visiting Team Adds Interest to Our Lives

http://www.portzersinhaiti.blogspot.com/2013/10/visiting-team-adds-interest-to-our-lives.html

Saturday, October 12, 2013. Visiting Team Adds Interest to Our Lives. We were here for almost week without a single visitor, since our last guests left last Friday morning. We've about run out of things to do, and the staff has been idle as well. You don't need to mop the floors too frequently in rooms where noone has been, and Jeff and I don't eat enough to keep our cook busy. Having 17 guests for lunch is the most fun we've had in a while! Yvette even baked a cake for our Friday luncheon. Good old ...

Portzers in Haiti: Lucky day - guesthouse a "beehive" of activity

http://www.portzersinhaiti.blogspot.com/2013/10/lucky-day-guesthouse-beehive-of-activity.html

Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Lucky day - guesthouse a "beehive" of activity. Tuesday was a lucky day. It rained during the afternoon and brought most of us inside. People were buzzing around the guesthouse, and we got a lot done. We are pleased that the frog infestation didn't reappear with the heavy rain, although there were quite a few jokes from staff about the aptly named "krapo." And they were noisy again last night, even though we couldn't see them. And they promised that after going into town late...

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: December 2014

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, December 16, 2014. From the market to the table. Cooking up meat in Haiti is not as simple as removing it from its package and throwing it on the grill or in the oven. Because much of the meat is purchased in the outdoor market, there are some extra steps for "cleaning" it. I'm so thankful not only for the delicious meals that Yvette cooks, but the care that she takes to prepare each one. Whether she is serving up a salad, meat, or anything in between,. Labels: Family Health Ministries. Over two...

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: Saying goodbye

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2015/03/saying-goodbye.html

Tuesday, March 3, 2015. About halfway into the year, I had to start a disciplined workout schedule as proof! I may be moving on, but I'm not finished in Haiti. I'll be back this summer with a team from my church. And I'm going to take this break time to pray through whatever and wherever it is that God has next for me. I'll try to take time to blog more on my personal site. Feel free to follow along here. Thank you all for being a part of the work FHM is doing! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We woul...

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: Kanaval time in Haiti

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2014/03/kanaval-time-in-haiti.html

Monday, March 3, 2014. Kanaval time in Haiti. 8220;Invaded by a euphoriant fever in the streets, maskers lost themselves into lascivious dances to the beats of drums, guitars and the songs of both mini and walking bands.” (Hudler Joseph, Le Matin). What is the history of Carnival? The following explanation is taken from AllAhWe.org. Which may or may not be the original source of this information:. Photos from Kanaval celebration in Petit Goave, 2013:. Creole phrase of the day:. Put your hands in the air!

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: October 2014

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 27, 2014. Win the lottery. in your dreams! If you've ever been to Haiti you've certainly noticed the colorful booths on the side of the road. These stalls are called borlettes and they are where Haitians test their luck with the lottery. I've heard figures as high as 35,000 borlettes throughout the country. You'll find them in nearly every village. To read an in-depth report by The Fletcher School at Tufts University on the subject of finance and the Haitian lottery click here. The exhaus...

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: February 2015

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 9, 2015. It's Kanaval time once again! Last year I wrote about Kanaval. And a bit of its history. This year the main celebrations will be in Port au Prince right at Mardi Gras time, but each year the coastal town of Jacmel. Boasts the most colorful and cultural experience according to many. I was able to head down for the main day of the parades over the weekend. I've always seen the photos in the tourism books and had it on my bucket list to go snap some of my own. That's what we did!

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: November 2014

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 30, 2014. How to make pikliz. Many Haitian dishes are not complete without "pikliz". I'm a Southern gal and cole slaw is a common side dish where I'm from. Well, pikliz looks similar to cole slaw but less creamy and a lot more spicy! Haitians use it as a relish to spice up their dish, taking as much as they want to add some flavor and zing to their rice, meat, and veggies. It's commonly eaten with fried pork and fried plantains—one of my favorite dishes! 1/2 medium head of green cabbage.

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: A Prayer for Haiti

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2014/12/a-prayer-for-haiti.html

Monday, December 8, 2014. A Prayer for Haiti. Haiti has many needs. Better infrastructure. A unified government. Education for all. Food security for impoverished families. More and better jobs. The list goes on. These needs are evident in the statistics. We read about Haiti:. 78% of Haitians are poor and live on less than $2 a day. 54% of Haitians live in extreme poverty (less than $1 a day). Half of children under the age of 5 are malnourished. Over 7% of children die at birth. View my complete profile.

Family Health Ministries in Haiti: June 2014

http://fhminhaiti.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 12, 2014. A fun filled summer. It's been a great week here at the guesthouse! We're hosting 19 people from three different groups. Of course we still have our four fabulous Duke SRT students here. We've also got a group of 13 here from Wynne Baptist Church in Arkansas, and we have two soon to be physicians here from Kansas through an organization called Heart to Heart International. We have some of the best staff here at the guesthouse of anywhere in Haiti! Thursday, June 5, 2014. And this...
