Visionary Dreamers: Be Warned | Mahan Siler / Anam Cara
https://mahansiler.wordpress.com/2015/01/27/visionary-dreamers-be-warned
Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. Visionary Dreamers: Be Warned. Without a vision, the people perish a truism we live by. We are marinated in biblical, historical and current visions of reconciliation, healing, forgiveness, liberation. Recently, on MLK day, once again we blew on the embers of the Dream. In our leading, teaching and preaching we keep painting pictures of what could be, plus the audacity to call them dreams of God. God hates visionary dreaming. I whispered. ...

A call for a new generation of Elders | Mahan Siler / Anam Cara

Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. A call for a new generation of Elders. November 29, 2014. Editor’s note: This is the first in an occasional series of commentaries exploring what it means to be an Elder in our era and in our community. Two startling facts awaken us to action: More people retiring into a longevity revolution, and the urgent concern we carry for the world left to next generations. In addition, some of us are privileged to enjoy reasonably good health, modest fi...

Eldering Power | Mahan Siler / Anam Cara

Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. April 20, 2014. Moses bows, taking in the blessing from her touch. Then, silence. A full silence. With thank you, Moses picks up his luggage, brief case, scarf, overcoat and leaves. I’m startled awake by both opportunity and urgency. What can the gift of eldering look like in our country? What if retire became re-invest? What if we, as elders, with intentionality, found specific ways to come alongside both this generation of adult leaders and ...

Meaningful Evaluation | Mahan Siler / Anam Cara
https://mahansiler.wordpress.com/2014/08/27/meaningful-evaluation
Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. Meaningful evaluation an oxymoron? Well, maybe not. Jim Chatham, a retired Presbyterian pastor, told me a story that gives a new angle on. I wish I had heard the story in earlier days of active leadership. I don’t ever let the question, Do you like it? Be the question used to evaluate my art. No. The question is, Does my art call you forward to a place where you have not been before? Does it invite you to a new perspective? Or, parishioner in ...

Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. Three Vines and a Vocation. A story of three intertwining vines is my attempt at the impossible, to image my life, in particular my vocational narrative. The first to begin growing in me was a mystical yearning,. And I have for over fifty years. From this place of detachment, I sat down before the question — what happened? Throughout my vocation, I was a member of some kind of support group. And for few years, I met for a full day each wee...

Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. AnamCara: Collegial Clergy Communities. This book raises the question: what if pastors offered their leadership from within the context of intentional community? And if so, what form might it take? This book is a resource and a guide for clergy who are interested in forming their own collegial group. Written from the experience of a pastor in ongoing community, the vision of AnamCara, small communities of collegial friends, is explored. Availa...

Preaching as Conversation | Mahan Siler / Anam Cara
https://mahansiler.wordpress.com/2014/12/02/preaching-as-conversation
Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. Funny, the things I remember about preaching. Like the time someone suggested that I preface each sermon with the warning noted on cigarette packages: What you are about to receive may be hazardous to your health! Don’t know what he meant, but I liked it. For sure, the gospel is hazardous to ready comfort and quick fixes. Dangerous, indeed. As Jesus warned John, sometimes it will take you where you don’t want to go. Then along the way, toward ...

Baptists Need Pastoral Stance on Homosexuality | Mahan Siler / Anam Cara

Mahan Siler / Anam Cara. Supporting leadership of the church. Baptists Need Pastoral Stance on Homosexuality. The majority of messengers has spoken. In a resolution adopted by the SBC in San Antonia, homosexuality was condemned as deviant, a manifestation of depraved nature, and a violation and perversion of divine standards. I do not question that the resolution represents the majority opinion of Southern Baptists. I do question whether God’s purpose of love and justice is served by such a resolution.
