Wandering the City of Detroit | The Cowation
http://thecowation.blogspot.com/2015/06/wandering-city-of-detroit.html
Wandering the City of Detroit. Monday, June 8, 2015. I've been walking for days. Not having access to a car in the Motor City makes it pretty difficult to navigate the spread-out landscape. My pedometer cheerfully chirped out that I was a marathoner yesterday - a real neighborhood Olympian. And the answer I got was just another question, humbling and unexpected: what does it look like to live when no one's looking out for you? Hi, I'm Jordan Alam, a Bengali-American writer based out of Seattle. My bl...

A Paper Cut, A Korean Spa, and Aspen, CO: Speaking and Publications of Late. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. I've just flown in from Aspen (and boy are my arms tired! Throwbackjokes). This week has been a flurry of activity - from getting a piece published on Refinery29 to speaking at the Aspen Ideas Festival, I and my words have taken me all over. So this week I'm giving you a recap so that I can get around to talking about my recent US travels and then maybe, just maybe. I spoke at the 2015 Aspen Ideas Festival.

The Wheel and the Hook | The Cowation
http://thecowation.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-wheel-and-hook.html
The Wheel and the Hook. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Passionate about ordinary things, like how ingredients become food – that detail was included in the winning story told at the Moth event. I attended last week. The detail was in reference to the storyteller’s friend (the subject of their piece), and I felt a kinship because of that choice; I too am passionate about ordinary things. Me trying to feed a carrot to a b&w fuzzy llama; I'm trying so hard to get them to like me. Like my work here?

You Can't Get Here by Walking: Traveling between Coasts | The Cowation
http://thecowation.blogspot.com/2015/07/you-cant-get-here-by-walking.html
You Can't Get Here by Walking: Traveling between Coasts. Thursday, July 16, 2015. The prompt for this piece was an exercise that I did at the Indiana University Writer’s Conference. When are you getting here? You’ve just missed the shuttle. The airport is humid. You spend your time re-folding clothes in your bag on a cushioned bench. When are you getting here? Take a detour and read my piece about wandering the city of Detroit. Hi, I'm Jordan Alam, a Bengali-American writer based out of Seattle. My b...

The Relieving Rejection | The Cowation
http://thecowation.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-relieving-rejection.html
Thursday, February 12, 2015. Saturated image of South Asian woman's back, in bikini, as she jumps into oncoming ocean waves. 8221; right there on the street and booking the next flight to Dhaka. My brain’s a little melodramatic. Everyone’s gotten at least one of these in their life. For almost all of last year, as I went through waves of un- and underemployment, they made me question my worth and the quality of my work just as much as the cover letters that never seemed to elicit any reply. 8211; it uses...

White Out: Erasure of the Black Lives Matter Panel and People of Color from the Brooklyn Zine Fest | The Cowation
http://thecowation.blogspot.com/2015/04/white-out-at-brooklyn-zine-fest.html
White Out: Erasure of the Black Lives Matter Panel and People of Color from the Brooklyn Zine Fest. Friday, April 17, 2015. My name is Jordan Alam and I was formerly the panel coordinator for the Brooklyn Zine Fest. I had to quit my position because the main organizers chose to remove a panel on Black Lives Matter zines, which communicated to me that black and brown voices were not valued in the space. Below is my experience. Our bodies and lives do not have the privilege to claim that they are ‘ap...
