Welcome to Rainhill.net

Hi, we're off on our travels and as promised this is a bit of a picture diary showing where we've been and what we've been doing (no, it's not all pictures of us boozing). Our first stop was the Drum Inn, a handy hostelry with a small camp site attached. It's only a minute or so off the M20 and about 25 minutes from the port at Dover (much closer still to the Eurotunnel). The Drum does decent pub grub and provides a last chance for a few pints of good English ale before having to make do with eurofizz.

Weinstrasse and the Black Forest

http://www.rainhill.net/germany_2.htm

Leaving Braubach we headed south towards the Pfalzwald and the 'Weinstrasse' a major wine producing region of Germany. Indeed wine is produced here in truly industrial quantities as indicated by the size of this 'wine barrel'. It is in fact a restaurant but the barrel purports to have a capacity of 1,700,000 litres! We're spending a couple of nights at Camping Schwartzwaldhorn. Overlooking the Simonswald valley, we'd recommend it to anyone visiting the area, smallish and very friendly. Unfortunately ...

Forcalquier and Alpe de Haute Provence

http://www.rainhill.net/provence.htm

Parked near Venice and in the wee small hours listening to the thunder crashing and the rain beating on the roof of the van and wondering if we would ever get some sleep we realised that we were thoroughly knackered. Monza had been fantastic but required early morning starts to get a good position on the circuit. Combined with late night partying it was hard going. Venice had been tiring and we had a plan that was basically a city tour of central Europe. Well, after a few days of doing absolutely nought ...

Switzerland and Lake Maggiore

http://www.rainhill.net/ch%20_and_i_1.htm

Our visit to Switzerland turned out to be just a straight drive through. We had thought of stopping for one night but sat-nav issues (tunnels and narrow valleys with not a lot of sky in view) combined with Sue's dodgy eyesight for reading maps decided us on heading straight for Italy. This was a chill out stop so we walked a bit, took in the scenery, read a lot and enjoyed a couple of good pizzas at the site's restaurant, a pleasant rest before lots of partying at Monza. Heading Home 1

http://www.rainhill.net/homeward_1.htm

Yes, I know, another boring piccy of Sue sitting (she's sometimes standing) by the van! Anyway, in line with our new policy of only travelling modest distances in any one day we left Forcelquier, passed through Grenoble (not impressed from what we saw) and stopped here at Camping Municipal Le Savoy in Challes-le-Eaux at the foot of the Chartreuse Mountains. We took a bit of a detour from the motorway to take a peek at Lake Geneva then carried on through (actually under) Neuchâtel. All these tunnels p...

Koblenz and the Rhine

http://www.rainhill.net/germany_1.htm

Koblenz is situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers and has it's origins in Roman times, celebrating it's 2000 year anniversary in 1992. We stopped for the night at a stellplatz (a parking place for motorhomes usually with some limited facilities such as electric points, waste disposal etc.) on the bank of the Rhine looking across to the centre of the city. The Rhine is very fast flowing and the upstream run takes about 5 hours but downstream only 3. A principle attraction of the middle...
