insideoutsider: The Nokia Communicator
http://rainioroberts.blogspot.com/2009/06/nokia-communicator.html
Wednesday, June 3, 2009. When will Nokia realise that making corny product placements in 'cool' films doesn't strengthen their image, it harms it. In JJ Abrams über cool reboot of Star Trek, for a brief but all-too-visible moment, young Kirk gets a call on his in-car Nokia communicator. This is an interesting product placement which seems to backfire. Ironically, in many ways this is an accurate representation of Nokia's present status. Only a few years ago, Nokia reigned supreme. But it's shocki...Havin...

http://rainioroberts.blogspot.com/2009/07/independence-day.html
Saturday, July 4, 2009. While browsing the Twitter trends as the clock ticked to 12:01 AM and July 4th, 2009, I was sadly not surprised to see a plethora of "Happy Independence Day's" interspersed with plentiful nationalist sentiment from my American cohabitants. Not exactly a nation to shy away from nationalism, I was nevertheless a little dismayed to see so many people conflating a celebration of independence with xenophobia, arrogance and ignorance. So what is quintessentially American? Briefly seal i...

Http:/ www.thescreenwritersstore.net/product info.php/products id/284. You can purchase the boxed upgrade already from. Http:/ www.thescreenwritersstore.net/product info.php/products id/283. But I'm wondering if the download is already on their servers. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Wednesday, August 1, 2007. On the Uses of Photography. I have a BA in photography, but I'm not particularly interested in taking photos. I'm more interested in how photographs are used, as a currency if you like. I'm interested in what we invest in them, and how power and ideology is conveyed through them. Today on Salon.com there was an interesting article on a particularly American fetish of retouching children's photographs. Of course the images above are obvious examples. But what is interesting ...

Wednesday, February 25, 2009. According to the latest University of Minnesota research:. MINNESOTA WATER IS GETTING SALTIER. There's no doubt that road salt helps drivers, but what happens to the chemical when spring arrives? U researchers discovered that salt is flowing into lakes and rivers. Civil engineering professor Heinz Stefan says this will affect aquatic life and drinking water.". Gee, d'ya think? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Friday, July 24, 2009. Spotify: The future of music? A recent article on WIRED about Spotify. Is very interesting. Spotify is a streaming music service has been operating in Europe for a year. It offers around 6 millions tracks, which is pretty impressive, and it will soon be coming to the US. You wouldn't have to worry about rights, or ownership issues, because it would all be available remotely. You could create a library of your favourite albums and songs. An über playlist, if you like. Yo...Of course...

Sunday, May 31, 2009. Guardian conceals ugly truth behind spintster. Susan Boyle, internet phenomenon, finished second place last night in the final of Britain's Got Talent. It's unlikely that this will have any effect on her success, as her future career is already assured. Boyle will soon be heading off to record an album of musical hits with the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Yet today, the Guardian- a highly-respected publication- covers the event in an article. Friday, May 25, 2007. Now, I'm a fairly well-connected guy. I like to think I know what's happening around me in my areas of interest. But occasionally, things slip by, and I found out at the last minute that something is happening which I had no idea about. Why is this? Just now I was chatting with a friend, and he mentioned that there is a seminar in Rovaniemi next month. Apparently it's been arranged by a bunch of people in Helsinki. They'll come here, then go to Lofoten in Norway. It brings to mind a...

Tuesday, July 10, 2007. Nothing political or controversial to add here. Just a quick pic from my recent hike at Pyhä. Thursday, July 5, 2007. Someone has at long last made some graffiti in rovaniemi! And anti/pro Nazi nonsense. I would really like to see the University or Polytechnic take some proactive action on this. There are many places that some good graffiti would brighten, and I know at least one person in London who could run a very interesting course in graffiti art. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, June 13, 2007. Its all academic. Or at least it should be. Mauri Yla-Kotola, rector of the University of Lapland, stated recently that the Media faculty should consider creating a professorship for film, so that film-making could be taught at the University. Its an interesting idea, but one which which reveals a lack of understanding of the film industry and a denial of the current state of the University of Lapland media faculty. In the media faculty of the University of Lapland,. Because one...
